  • But the word reform is particularly slippery and tendentious.
  • The clarity of language be damned: They come to bury a given institution rather than to improve it, but they describe their mission as “reform.”
  • It’s a very clever gambit, you have to admit. Either you’re in favor of privatization or else you are inexplicably satisfied with mediocrity.
  • there’s plenty of room for dissatisfaction with the current state of our schools. An awful lot is wrong with them: the way conformity is valued over curiosity and enforced with rewards and punishments, the way children are compelled to compete against one another, the way curriculum so often privileges skills over meaning, the way students are prevented from designing their own learning, the way instruction and assessment are increasingly standardized, the way different avenues of study are rarely integrated, the way educators are systematically deskilled .
  • To that extent, even if privatization worked exactly the way it was supposed to, we shouldn’t expect any of the defects I’ve just listed to be corrected.
  • Making schools resemble businesses often results in a kind of pedagogy that’s not merely conservative but reactionary, turning back the clock on the few changes that have managed to infiltrate and improve classrooms.
  • ut an attack on schooling as we know it is generally grounded in politics rather than pedagogy, and is most energetically advanced by those who despise not just public schools but all public institutions.

Ficly - A better, shorter story - 4 views

  •
Ficly is about creativity. When I was originally thinking about this idea, I was looking for something creative I could do for the last fifteen minutes of my lunch break before I jumped back into coding and writing documentation. I'd originally had an idea for a much larger site for serious fiction, but realized that most people don't have the time to write serious fiction. But, everyone can carve out fifteen minutes to either continue a story someone else has started, or start something of their own - something simple - two, maybe three paragraphs of a character, a plot or even just a place. That's the premise. We impose a limit of 1,024 characters because we think constraints are good. They make you choose your words more carefully. They also make it less daunting than starting at a never-ending blank screen in a word processor. All you have to do is write one kilobyte of something - something fictional. That's all.

Twenty Everyday Ways to Model Technology Use for Students | Edutopia - 9 views

  •
I wanted to post a list that talked about how to "use" technology in the classroom, but I found myself revising that word "use" to the more general word, "model." The reason I did this is because so many teachers believe that if students aren't actively sitting in front of the computer screen themselves, then clearly technology is not being used in the classroom. This myth can be a gatekeeper of sorts for many teachers, and I wanted to create a list that both gives advice on how to "use" but also acknowledges that in simply modeling the use the of technology, the students are also learning to use it in an indirect way.

Clutter | Home | Create - Connect - Share - 6 views

  •
The goal of Clutter is to allow users to collaborate by linking Scratch projects. On the Scratch site it is possible to add projects to galleries, however, this is only one way to bring Scratch projects together. In Clutter there are three ways to bring projects together: Story Clutters allow you order projects sequentially. Secret Word Clutters requires users to type in a secret word to move to the next project in a sequence. Link Clutters allow you to go to any project inside a Clutter if you know the link word that is associated with the project.

Unlike online word processors, the document is displayed in high quality with fonts and layout just like the printed version. It is easy to use and runs in all common web browsers, with no software or plugins to install. "

What Is Social Bookmarking: Social bookmarking is a form of bookmark sharing that allows you to bookmark websites on the Internet using a service instead of using the browser's bookmarking feature. This service also makes it easy to share bookmarks. The sharing and collaboration feature explains the use of the word "social" in this term. Social bookmarking uses a form of tagging that allows users to tag sites they want to bookmark with a keyword, similar to how Twitter hashtags work.
