Reducing Stereotype Threat - 1 views

  •
At our ODEI/CIP book discussions, there was a lot of concern about stereotype threat. "Stereotype threat refers to being at risk of confirming, as self-characteristic, a negative stereotype about one's group." This stress has been linked to reduced performance in a number of academic and social areas. Put another way, recognizing and removing sources of stereotype threat can be a good way to create inclusive environments where everyone can succeed.

Integrated Course Design - 1 views

  •
A six-page synopsis by Dee Fink of his seminal book on course design, "Creating Significant Learning Experiences." From the text: "The heart of this approach is to decide first what students can and should learn in relation to this subject and then figure out how such learning can be facilitated. Although this approach requires more time and effort, it also offers the best chance of ensuring that students have a significant learning experience."

A Video About Questions and Possible Trends in Education - 1 views

  •
This is Paul Andersen, a high school teacher in Bozeman, MT. He was 2011 Montana Teacher of the Year, and he has delivered Ted talks and is a prolific web video producer. In this video he describes some of the trends in the evolution of educational text books, but, moreover, he touches upon some recurring deep problems in teaching modern students. These are problems for teachers, especially us at the higher end of education as the students coming our way will be more demanding of our product. I think this is a large driving force for pedagogical change. I thought this was a tough one as far as tags are concerned; if you have better ideas for a tag, please send it my way.

  •
What do you do to mark the beginnings and endings of classes? I took a class in grad school which started with 5 minutes of reviewing the news relevant to libraries, books, or reading... or Elvis, because the prof was a big Elvis fan and wanted to lighten the tone a bit. It worked as an engaging ritual, marking the transition into the class.

25 Years of Ed Tech: The Serialized Audio Version - 1 views

  •
Martin Weller's 25 Years of Ed Tech is a valuable reminder that there is a history to the use of computers in the classroom (and it goes beyond March 2020). It's an open access book, available in print and electronically, but I'm enjoying this audio version, released one chapter at a time, read by a terrific selection of experts in the field.
