iPad Air 2 Review: Why the iPad Became My Main Computer - MacStories - 0 views

  • Would the portability of an iPad be welcome in the student's backpack or the chef's countertop? Absolutely.
  • There's a big difference between reflecting upon the future of the iPad and claiming that nobody knows what it's good for anymore.

Ken's iPad Reflection, Week 1 | Disruptive Technologies - 2 views

  • I noticed the iPad came with GarageBand preinstalled. As a sometimes composer I was curious to try it out, but when I try to open it it just closes right away. The same happens with Numbers, iTunes U, iMovie, Pages, and Keynote.

Personal Introduction - Shady | Disruptive Technologies - 0 views

Just like over time teachers developed new practice for dealing with other disruptive technologies -- teaching methods will change as we better unpack those affordances. It is the job of people like us to dig in and understand the types of behaviors these new environments can support and promote.

This is a complicated question that I also try to manage. We recently had to have a conversation with our 8 year old about when it is OK to facetime other friends and family -- no, 10:00 at night is not ok to FT your younger cousin.

Some of it has to do with only ever living in this environment. We are learning behavior, while they are simply going about behaving in the only way they've ever known.

What a crazy idea for a weekly create!
  • Today we discovered Fivestone, a Nashville-based design studio, engineered one of the more creative uses of the Post-it® Notes camera we’ve seen. They captured their team’s paper-based doodles and turned them into animations.
  •
Truly an interesting and novel use of Evernote and their post-it note integration. An idea for a weekly create? I double dog dare you!

Setting the Stage for Anytime, Anywhere Learning -- Campus Technology - 0 views

  • recalled one day during midterm exams when she saw a couple of students sit down at a cluster of couches, pull a marker board over and begin working their way through a math problem together. Shortly after beginning, they texted a couple more classmates, who joined their discussion a few minutes later.
  • the space was underutilized when students were not always comfortable sitting next to somebody they didn't know and "hacking and settling" for long periods of time.
  • "We saw that constantly in students' snippets," Doshi said. "They'd take a picture of a study area and say they were looking for an empty table. But when you look at the pictures, there were four-person tables and only one person sitting at them."

Perhaps we could do this with the iPad this semester in our own Library?
  • So they commissioned Herman Miller Insight and Exploration teams to study student use of Clough Commons in the fall of 2012.
  • She gave students a mobile app to record, five times a day over a designated period of time, what they were doing at Clough — and take a picture of what was going on around them.
  • use of the library is up 15 percent since the building opened in 2011.

  • "I was able to understand that the workday of a student, from when they come in as a freshman to their last day, is really comprised of a dynamic flow of mindsets, activities and experiences that are both physical and intellectual,"

  • Teachers can create one email address for their class and give it to all of their students to use to publish to a class blog. Just ask your students to add their username or some other way of identifying themselves at the beginning or end of the email.
