CCSS-K12

This ASCD article is a lengthy read, but one that's worthwhile. It really gets into the nuts and bolts of the shifts that are going to be required of ELA teachers. There are some big things that are going to change under the Core. This not only details them, but offers suggestions and insight into how to make them happen in your own classroom.

Information about text complexity. This really boils it down nicely into chunks that are easy to understand.

How can you help math teachers shift to using higher-quality problems? Show them the problems, and solve them together! Love this article that describes a great approach for helping math teachers make the shift.

Very helpful video from the Teacher Channel. 14 minutes in length, it would be great to show this to middle school math teachers to help them understand the changes expected of them under the CCSS.

This publication from Eye on Education gives a look at the role formative assessment plays in K-5 mathematics instruction.

Michael Milton (@42ThinkDeep on twitter) is publishing some great blog posts that contain ways to connect lessons to the CCSS. This is just one great example. There are links to others in the series at the bottom of this post.

Is this a good thing? Not sure. I do know that this article is a thought provoking look at the depth and complexity that could be a part of CCSS implementation. Definitely worth a read.

So wary of publishers that claim to be "aligned" to the CCSS. How is that possible when we don't know what the assessments look like?

This is a great article about implementation. It also provides great background about how the CCSS came to be. Definitely worthy of your time.

While I don't agree with all the points Anthony Cody makes in this article, I do think that it is important to learn about criticisms that some people have. With an issue as huge as the CCSS, we should all draw our own informed conclusions by learning about both sides of the story.

Great interview with professor Myra Zarnowski of Queens College about nonfiction and the Common Core state standards. I.N.K. (Interesting Non-Fiction for Kids) is a great blog by non-fiction authors...a good one to follow!

Alfie Kohn is a thought leader that I really respect. His opinions always seem to resonate with me. I'm curious to dig into this interview to find out what he thinks about the CCSS. He certainly has some criticisms of national standards that are worthy of consideration.

The group of states with high-quality CCSS resource collections continues to grow. Came across this site from Hawaii this week and it looks good. I still wish that there was a common resource site for all states (it only make sense with the "common" core, right?) but right now, there isn't. I also wish every state was offering as much as states like Hawaii, Kansas, North Carolina, and others.

I found this helpful for thinking about dealing with the CCSS demands regarding text complexity.

Great post on Appendix A of the ELA standards, specifically the few pages that outline the keys to CCSS writing standards. Very informative.
