A great explanation of how and why to use screencasting, with many examples and video tutorials. From Modern Lessons. "The fundamental advantage of screencasting is that it allows educators to provide an easily created video resource for their students that essentially acts like a private tutor. It gives students a way to explain themselves through drawing, typing, voice narration, and video, allowing you, as the educator, to demonstrate a process, concept or skill. Through published screencasts, students can access content in and out of class in order to learn at their own pace. However, we also want to think about having our students act as creators of their own screencasts to demonstrate their problem solving, tell a story, explain a sequence, diagram a concept, or illustrate a concept."

R. Byrne discusses ScreenCastify, Snagit for Chrome, and Google+ Hangout On Air (when no one else is in your Hangout). With detailed instructions and several instructive videos showing how. Screencasts are often the best way to show students how to do something, and students can easily make them to show each other or to demonstrate their expertise in something. My 9-year-old granddaughter is making screencasts of her game play with Minecraft just for fun.

Another free screencast tool--no downloading. Lots of informative screencasts archived at the site also. Make instructional videos for your students, or engage them in a project to create instructional screencasts for their peers.

This blog has a nice table with the comparisons. I believe some of these screencasting tools are also for Mac. Screencasts are very useful for showing new students how to use tools, where to find folders on their computer, how to create a blog entry, and so on.

From R Byrne: This is the most useful collection of screencasting tools I've seen. Includes both Windows and Mac applications. There are several worth trying and having on your desktop. Show Me What's Wrong, offered by Screencast-O-Matic, might be of particular help: it can be sent to a student having trouble with an application. When he/she opens the mailing, they start recording their screen, audio recording as they explain what they are doing and why they are having a problem. When they close the application it is mailed to you. This list of tools also includes some for capturing iPad and Android device screens, including AirDroid that can mirror your tablet on Mac or Windows computers.

I thought Jing had disappeared, but it seems you can still use it: Capture your computer screen in a basic video; capture animations, and still images; share on the Web. Edit on Screencast.com, also by TechSmith.

Jing can be used to make a screencast of what's on your monitor--including a Powerpoint persentation--pretty cool! Jing Pro is $15/year.

A screencaster on the Internet--nothing to download. For Mac or PC, you can record anything within a liited frame for 5 min., so this would be nice to help students start running a program or to create their own short presentations. Easy to upload to YouTube, embed on a Website, or download as mp4. See R. Stannard's instructional video

Add a voiceover or video to your PPT presentation with PowerPoint, Google Docs or PDF (Keynote and Prezi). This useful little screencast app helps make your ppt more understandable. Screen capture and desktop recording tools: considers CamStudio, Active Presenter, BB Flashback, Jing, Screenspresso, and the free trial version of Camtasia Studio. These are useful tools for creating screencasts and presentations (which are really usually two very different functions). Doesn't mention anything mobile.

This is such a cool tool that I have to include it, even though it is not free -- just .99 cents U.S. Create your screencast directly on an iPod and upload it as MP4 directly to YouTube. You can draw on the website with a marker, draw tool, or laser point in different colors and two different styles. Annotations scroll with the page. Will not record video content, however. Purchase in iTunes or Apple Store.

A screen recorder that comes in a free edition, as well as two more professional levels. Windows 7 only. Screen recordings are great for showing students how to use applications, open specific files/folders, etc. Students can also use a screencast to put together their project presentations on their own computer and then upload them as videos to YouTube or a wiki.

Very easy screencasting tool with a visual explanation of how to work it right on the frontpage. Students can see and hear the explanation of how your screen is working, or of course, work with each other.

Shows how you can use Xtranormal to make 3-D characters. Your students can create a movie scenario, write the script, make the characters, select camera angles, add voices (in several languages) in quite long dialogues, and share the movie by email. Stannard takes you through the entire process (about 10 min.) using a Camtasia screencast.

This seems like a great app for creating presentations while also controlling a smartboard and your computer from your iPad.
