The tools R.Byrne reviews would make for excellent activities for ESL students, for studying cultural geography, and for exploring relationship within the world.

An "automated proofreader and your personal grammar coach." I haven't tried it yet, but it's recommended by a CALL IS member. Looks easy to use and recommended by a number of universities. Probably will not be ESL/EFL specific.

This video lesson plan encourages "thinking notes" that "require students to track their response to a text and engage in more thoughtful reading? " Good idea that can be readily adapted to ESL/EFL reading classes.

"A fun method to learn and improve your foreign languages like English through music and typing in song lyrics" This is an activity that many of us like to use in the EFL/ESL classroom, and here it is online. There are at least six languages and a fairly wide set of choices in songs.

Nik Peachey's blog opens avenue for discussing immigration issues: "OPENCities is a project that collects together information and case studies on best practice regarding the successful social and cultural integration of migrant workers and their families into their host cities. As many of you probably already know, the issue of migration will be one that is and will continue to have huge impact on our societies over the next few decades and dealing with this effectively is going to be of key importance."

Videos of interest for ESL/EFL learners, categorized and with closed captioning. Also includes common mispronunciation, slang, and idiom-oriented videos, and coming soon will be various teaching videos. A well organized site, but it needs a little explanation at the top of the front page.

Despite being the work of one man, Salman Khan, this 1600+ video library is the most-used educational video resource as measured by YouTube video views per day and unique users per month. We are complementing this ever-growing library with user-paced exercises--developed as an open source project--allowing the Khan Academy to become the free classroom for the World." Though not specifically EFL/ESL, the lessons offered could be very useful in class, particularly math, science, history, SAT prep, Calif Standards tests, etc. Also topical videos, such as the Geithner plan to solve the banking crisis of 2009-10.

ESL Lesson (q.v.) is using this app to broadcast classroom documentaries on the Teacher's TV channel.

Has lists of online activities, categorized by "pre-intermediate," "intermediate," and "advanced" levels of learners, as well as links to a dozen or so chat groups for English learners, an online dictionary, and a variety of tests and exercises.

Short, timely messages about a wide variety of sites that are useful for EFL/ESL learning and for teachers. You can sign up to receive email notifications when new items are posted.

Not specifically for ESL/EFL. Nice that you can use the flashcards on- or off-line.

A very detailed guide to writing a research paper, for students in higher ed. This is not oriented toward ESL/EFL, however, it has many good tips and procedures, including how to analyze an essay question, which might help with the TOEFL writing section.

Children create their own commic strip using characters provided from database. Not specifically for ESL/EFL, but is a nice writing activity, and can be in any of several European languages.--EHS
