The controversial "demotion" of Pluto was mainly the result of discoveries by a team of astronomers led by Michael Brown. In this talk, Dr. Brown will share the inside story of how he discovered "other Pluto's" out there beyond Neptune, including Eris, larger than Pluto,which he later named for the goddess of discord. Because, as he'll describe with his characteristic humor, its discovery resulted in a private and public controversy which led to the redefinition of what a planet is.

Begich Middle School In Anchorage, AK) is building two different airplanes, one a Pietenpole and the other some kind of ultralight. They have even made up their own Build A Plane t-shirts with a list of local sponsors who are making the project happen. Their teacher who was the spine of the project left and the school has been looking for someone that knows what they're doing to take over. Guess who's taking the job? From nearby Elmendorf Air Force Base (Anchorage), the United States Air Force is sending the 3rd Equipment Maintenance Squadron to partner with the kids to finish the airplane.

He provided the inspiration that spurred our Principal, Jeanne Fischer, to comment to Angie Slingluff, FAA Education Coordinator, that she would love to bring a project like that to our middle school. Dan Carey, our Applied Technology Teacher (and a pilot) was also very interested in capturing this project for Begich, after hearing Barrington Irving's comments about a group of students in Hooper Bay who are building a plane."

Follow the Desert RATS Team During Analog Testing The NASA Desert Research and Technology Studies team, also known as Desert RATS, marks its fourteenth annual field test and the first time a mission to an asteroid will be simulated. While NASA has landed astronauts on the moon and rovers on Mars, the agency is only beginning to tackle the challenges of visiting an asteroid. Desert RATS team members will conduct simulated human and robotic space exploration test activities in extreme Arizona terrain to investigate and develop realistic technical and mission-driven operations similar to those of an asteroid mission.
