Participants begin their adventure in an online community. The project culminates with a summer experience at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Educational researchers have found that K-12 students and teachers generally have a poor conception of what engineers do. In one study, a majority of K-12 students expressed the view that engineers build buildings and fix things, particularly cars, rather than improve existing technologies or design new ones. A small but significant minority of students, about 10 percent, confound engineers with those who drive trains.
