  •
Aug. 17, 1807: 'Fulton's Folly' Steams up the Hudson 1807: Robert Fulton's steamboat Clermont leaves New York harbor for a trip up the Hudson River to Albany, New York. It is carrying paying passengers, marking the first commercial use of an invention that has more detractors than defenders. Fulton didn't invent the steamboat, as he is often credited with doing, but he was the first to make a commercial success with this odd, somewhat ungainly vessel."

Cool math - Fractals - Fractal art, lessons and generators - 0 views

  •
"Back in the 1960's, a French mathematician named Benoit Mandelbrot started thinking about simple pretty simple: How long is the coast of Britain? Sure, it seems easy enough... But, think about how you'd really measure it... In 1975, he made up the word "fractal" because he thought these figures would look fractured or broken up. It wasn't until he had a computer that he could SEE a picture of what he'd been thinking about!"

"This time-lapse video of a Boeing manufacturing facility is pretty awesome, if you're into watching "how it's made" type stuff or if you like to see sped-up footage of people. I recommend keeping the volume down and making up your own sound effects starting at 1:03, when employees begin to test everything on the plane. "

The FanWing looks like someone has put the blades of a combine harvester behind a helicopter cockpit and forgotten about the rest of the fuselage. That combine harvester, the FanWing propulsion system, is a fan in a wing, making it a thick wing that provides lift and thrust.

Model Makers-Young C. Park - aluminum models - 0 views

  •
"The corsair had always been a favorite of mine, so I decided to build its tail fin and rudder to see what it would look like in aluminum. I also decided on moveable trim tabs and rudder and planned to use it as a decorative piece if I could complete it. At this point the tail was my only objective. Had I considered building an entire plane at this point I would have surely become discouraged and never started."
