Educational researchers have found that K-12 students and teachers generally have a poor conception of what engineers do. In one study, a majority of K-12 students expressed the view that engineers build buildings and fix things, particularly cars, rather than improve existing technologies or design new ones. A small but significant minority of students, about 10 percent, confound engineers with those who drive trains.

NASA Space Grant ESCAPE to Alaska Summer Camp The Alaska Space Grant Program in partnership with NASA invites students and teachers to a summer camp opportunity at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. ASGP/NASA will provide training and experiences for students and teachers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. The camp is a one-week professional development program for educators of grades 7-12 and a one-week academic summer program for students entering grades 8-12 in the fall. Attendees have the opportunity to choose from two modules - "FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics Training" and "Energy in Alaska." Camp sessions take place in mid-June. Applications are due June 4, 2011.

"Our school was treated to a visit by Barrington Irving, the first African-American pilot to fly solo around the world, who spoke to our students during a school-wide assembly in the fall of 2008. He provided the inspiration that spurred our Principal, Jeanne Fischer, to comment to Angie Slingluff, FAA Education Coordinator, that she would love to bring a project like that to our middle school. Dan Carey, our Applied Technology Teacher (and a pilot) was also very interested in capturing this project for Begich, after hearing Barrington Irving's comments about a group of students in Hooper Bay who are building a plane."
