MT. VERNON - Youth from all four Jefferson County high schools were able to find out more about careers by shadowing business people in the community on Thursday during Youth and Business Day, sponsored by the Elks. This year, the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce worked with the Elks to promote the program to area youth.

"Wahpeton youth Meshach Aho travels roughly 200 miles west each summer to visit a camp that helps him feel at ease. Aho recently returned from Camp Grassick, a Dawson, N.D.-based site operated by the Elks of North Dakota that welcomes physically and mentally disabled campers statewide. Youth get additional help in speech, language and other problem areas during two summer sessions."

Kevin Blaine, Red Bank Elks Lodge #233 Youth Activities Chairman, presents a check for $1000 to Jill Mc Donald, Employment Readiness Program Manager, of Fort Monmouth. Advertisement The donation will benefit over 50 children of Fort Monmouth's 2009 Summer Youth Volunteer Program. This program is an employment readiness program held for teenagers who are immediate family members of the military and of Ft Monmouth. The students will be gaining "World of Work" experience during the summer program through volunteer services in and around the base community.

The Maine Elks Association (MEA) recently honored several youths from across the State of Maine as part of their 80th Annual State Convention held at the Augusta Elks Lodge. The youths were recognized as state winners of contests sponsored by the association. The awards were presented at a special banquet, attended by over 200 members, guests, and families of the recipients.

Good thing for a lodge to do. Trouble is that it comes so soon after the changing of the leadership, it is hard for the new ER to manage and do everything else. consequently, you need some PER's with some time to orchestrate this event. With so many PER retread's, most lodges (ours included) just don't have the manpower.

"A charity golf tournament hosted by the Desert Hot Springs Elks Lodge raised a record $18,000, the club announced. About $7,000 will go to several Desert Hot Springs youth charities, and the remaining money will go to the California-Hawaii Elks Major Protect, a nonprofit group that helps disabled youth, the club said."

The Mission Viejo Elks recently presented their annual Youth Appreciation Awards to several boys and girls who excelled in scholastics, sports and scouting during the past twelve months.

PAW PAW - The Paw Paw Elks Lodge 2511 will hold a free youth archery shoot, Saturday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the lodge, 41816 N. M-40. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Bows and targets will be provided. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., an all-you-can-eat wild game luncheon will be served.

The Tracy Elks Club's latest effort to help youngsters get into sports included a little coaching this summer from the golf pro at Old River Golf Course. This was the third of four week-long youth golf clinics hosted by the Elks and Old River. Curtis Matsuno, who teaches at Old River and coaches players as they prepare for top amateur tournaments, said he's learned that a lot of families want to get their kids into the sport. The Dover Elks Lodge will be hosting a series of special events to honor the youth of our community. The Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks (B.P.O.E.) is a national organization committed to recognizing the accomplishments of our young people. This year the Lodge will be awarding over $16,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors in the area.

"Tiffin Elks Lodge 94 is celebrating 127 years in Tiffin. Exalted Ruler Joe Steinmetz, who joined the lodge seven years ago, is helping plan the event with other members. Why celebrate 127 years? "We want to commemorate 127 years of benevolence in Tiffin and celebrate another 100 years of active involvement in our community," Steinmetz said. Friday, dinner and live entertainment will take place for members and guests. Events Saturday are open to the public at 106 E. Perry St. Indoor and outdoor activities are to continue all day Saturday, with proceeds to benefit Disabled American Veterans. At 8 a.m., registration opens for a 5K run or 1K walk. An opening ceremony is at 9:30 a.m. and the race steps off at 10 a.m., following a route along Riverside Drive and downtown Tiffin. Registration for the 5K and 1K can be done up to the day of the race at $15 per person. The age groups are: 12 and under; 13-19; 20-34; 35-50; and over 50. Forms can be obtained at the Elks, Clover Club, Madison Street Tavern, Varsity Barber Shop, Champs Barber Shop, Pit Stop, Reino's and Ace Hardware. Checks should be made payable to Tiffin Elks Lodge 94. A grill and beverage bar opens at noon to serve all day. A mini-golf challenge and cornhole tournament are to begin at 1 p.m. in the parking lot. The cost is $20 per team for the cornhole tournament. Steinmetz said the Elks have partnered with organizations such as Winterfest and Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival and are looking for grant opportunities for both events this year. "At least that's how it seemed on Saturday when several hundred sick or disadvantaged youths and their families met for a holiday party at the Elks Lodge in San Pedro. Kids from around the Harbor Area took turns sitting on Santa's lap, playing games and being served a nice lunch by volunteers. "

The South Hills Elks new membership drive is off to a stupendous start! The Elks welcomed and installed 18 new Elks on Tuesday night May 12 at the Lodge. The New Elks were instructed on our virtues, bylaws and our Charity mission. The South Hills Elks is dedicated to assisting the youth of the South Hills along with the Veterans of the Pittsburgh area.

The Elks club picked eight high school seniors to pair up with local leaders for the annual Elks' Youth Leadership Day. Six of the students were from Bayonne High School, one was from Holy Family Academy, and one from St. Peter's Prep.

Two local organizations have combined their resources in order to more adequately provide assistance to members of the surrounding community. On Friday, Modern Woodmen Representative JoLynne Stainbrook and Modern Woodmen Youth Service Club representative Adina Findley presented members of the Fort Scott Elks Lodge with a check for $500 that will be used for various Elks projects, according to Stainbrook.

The South Hills Elks Lodge #2213 Is Accepting New member Applications During the Month of April and May. Must be 21 years of Age and an American Citizen. The Lodge is a private fraternal organization dedicated to assisting the Youth and veterans of the South Hills area.

DOVER - Emblem Club members from across the state converged on the Garrison City Sunday to fill backpacks with goodies for youths who've had family members in the military deploy overseas. The effort to make "hero packs" was a part of Operation: Military Kids.
