PITTSBURG - If there is a weakness in Andrew Ortolani's golf game, it's chipping. "I probably also need to work on my grip on my driver," he said. As a young man just a month away from being 11 years old, Ortolani takes the game of golf pretty seriously - at least during the six-week golf lessons at Four Oaks Golf Course, sponsored by the Pittsburg Elks Lodge. "I like competing for those slushies," he said, adding that blue raspberry is his favorite flavor.

The Tracy Elks Club's latest effort to help youngsters get into sports included a little coaching this summer from the golf pro at Old River Golf Course. This was the third of four week-long youth golf clinics hosted by the Elks and Old River. Curtis Matsuno, who teaches at Old River and coaches players as they prepare for top amateur tournaments, said he's learned that a lot of families want to get their kids into the sport. It started modestly enough when "Spanky" Rathjen, former Grand Exalted Ruler of Lodge 2031,

"Mason resident Rich Hancock will attempt to play 100 holes of golf at the 797 Elks Golf Course in hopes of raising money for the American Cancer Society."

On June 19 the St. Mary's Elks Lodge 2092 held a fun, action-packed golf tournament at the PAX NAS course on Cedar Point. Some 72 plus golfers participated for fun, cash prizes and bragging rights on the gorgeous day and even more beautiful golf course. TheBAYNET.com was there to record all the fun and scenes. "Tiffin Elks Lodge 94 is celebrating 127 years in Tiffin. Exalted Ruler Joe Steinmetz, who joined the lodge seven years ago, is helping plan the event with other members. Why celebrate 127 years? "We want to commemorate 127 years of benevolence in Tiffin and celebrate another 100 years of active involvement in our community," Steinmetz said. Friday, dinner and live entertainment will take place for members and guests. Events Saturday are open to the public at 106 E. Perry St. Indoor and outdoor activities are to continue all day Saturday, with proceeds to benefit Disabled American Veterans. At 8 a.m., registration opens for a 5K run or 1K walk. An opening ceremony is at 9:30 a.m. and the race steps off at 10 a.m., following a route along Riverside Drive and downtown Tiffin. Registration for the 5K and 1K can be done up to the day of the race at $15 per person. The age groups are: 12 and under; 13-19; 20-34; 35-50; and over 50. Forms can be obtained at the Elks, Clover Club, Madison Street Tavern, Varsity Barber Shop, Champs Barber Shop, Pit Stop, Reino's and Ace Hardware. Checks should be made payable to Tiffin Elks Lodge 94. A grill and beverage bar opens at noon to serve all day. A mini-golf challenge and cornhole tournament are to begin at 1 p.m. in the parking lot. The cost is $20 per team for the cornhole tournament. Next, 8-11 p.m. is the "rooty music" of Dragon Wagon, with a mix of bluegrass, rock and folk. Steinmetz said the Elks National Foundation issues grants to qualifying lodges to meet community needs. Steinmetz said the Elks have partnered with organizations such as Winterfest and Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival and are looking for grant opportunities for both events this year. "A charity golf tournament hosted by the Desert Hot Springs Elks Lodge raised a record $18,000, the club announced. About $7,000 will go to several Desert Hot Springs youth charities, and the remaining money will go to the California-Hawaii Elks Major Protect, a nonprofit group that helps disabled youth, the club said."

I hope it works for them. Golf courses are struggling

The summer golf calendar is filled with a myriad of benefit tournaments, but only a handful encompass such a worthy cause as the Arizona Elks Association Social Welfare Clothe-a-Child event. All the proceeds are used to purchase clothing for needy and disadvantaged children. "This is a statewide program, some of our clubs do it (donate clothes) at Christmas and some before the first day of school," said tournament chairman Becky Waer. "We do it through the schools, so it is kind of a confidential thing."

"Along the way, someone passed on the idea of merging with the Springfield Elks Lodge No. 51."

The Elks are a fraternal organization founded in 1868, although the organization had previously existed under the name of Jolly Corks. The first lodge was formed in New York City. The local lodge is focused on Maplewood and Irvington as well as South Orange and hosts a pancake breakfast every second Sunday of the month. Other fundraising events include a golf outing in July and a pig roast in September.

It's hard to believe that a lodge this old would lose so many members or attract so few new members that it had to sell it's golf course. I don't know what kind of shape the course was in but if in decent shape then only mismanagment over the years could be the only reason its gone.

The Grand Lodge membership report shows they went from 295 to 104 members in five years. That's pretty disturbing.
