How your website is a communication tool

There are ways to build traffic to your website without having to spend money. I've been self-employed for the past 15 years, and one of my favorite ventures was developing websites. One of my sites, a web directory, provided good monthly income through affiliate advertising, but it wouldn't have been successful if I hadn't been able to generate large numbers of visitors. My directory pages ranked in the top 5 on MSN and other places, and I never paid one cent to any person or business or search engine to get there; however, I did spend a good amount of time working to build my traffic.

Last week I made some alterations to my site's design, but no one seemed to notice. In fact, few people have ever commented about my blog's design at all. The same goes with the music intros for my podcasts. I can change the music each time, and no one ever responds. In contrast, if a post has good content, I see a steady stream of comments. My experience leads me to conclude that content is about 90% important, and design is 10% important.

On May 16, 2008 I placed my order for ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income via Amazon. A week later my book arrived, however, due to it being the end of the school year and everyday family chaos, I placed the book on my nightstand with the promise I would read it eventually. We all do that, don't we? June 4th was the morning my world came to a screeching halt. We'd had several days of steady, non-stop and, at times, heavy rains here in Indiana. That morning I woke to over three feet of water in our finished basement. When we opened the basement door and saw the water pouring in around the windows and down the walls, there was little else we could do besides close the door and let Mother Nature have her say.

I had been using a short list of social media principles with my clients. When I started writing my book I wanted to codify them. So research was in order. Imagine my surprise when I found page after page after page of social media principles. The initial research turned up sixty four of the little buggers. I'll post my own personal list of social media principles that should make all these a little more concise and coherent.

I'm making an effort to become less reliant on visiting websites for the data I need. Spending a majority of my time in Google Reader, I decided RSS could help me accomplish this task. I no longer have to visit Yahoo to read my horoscopes or sports scores. I now track my Ebay auctions from Google Reader. These are some of the ways I started to recently use and rediscover RSS. This post touches on 30 different ways RSS can be used.

I've used Delicious for a long time to manage my Web bookmarks. It was easy to use, accessible from any browser, and worked well with Firefox. For all my needs, it was a great bookmarking service. Then I found Diigo, and suddenly Delicious didn't look so good anymore. Diigo is another social bookmarking service (and one we've covered before), offering all of Delicious' relevant features and much more. I left Delicious, and haven't ever looked back. There are a lot of things I love about Diigo, but there are seven features that sold me on using Diigo for all my bookmarking needs. These are all in addition to the features I deem non-negotiable for social bookmarking sites- tagging, Firefox extensions, looking at popular bookmarks, etc.
