Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that affects the skin. It occurs when the immune system mistakes the skin cells as a pathogen, and sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells. The condition is characterized by thick inflammed (red) skin with flaky whitish patches which closely resemble scales. Psoriasis is not a contagious disease and one of its most common triggers is high levels of stress either physical or mental.
