Owen, By Kevin Henkes , Illustrated by Kevin Henkes: HarperCollins Children's Books - 0 views

  •
    A great portrayal of a mouse child learning to grow up and leave his childhood friend, his blankey. His mother helps him grow up and make his blankey into a big boy hankey! This book portrays a great picture of how and what it takes for children to grown up. This is one of the books strengths. From a teachers viewpoint I think this would be great to read with little children because they can relate to having to deal with something like growing apart from your childhood friend such as a blankey. I do have this book, it is my own, so if you would like to check it out, you can get it from me, Enjoy (;

Papa's Latkes - Michelle Edwards - 0 views

  •
Papa's Latkes is a fantastic story about a family growing up without a mother. This is a heartwarming book about a family of two girls, Selma and Dora, and their dad who are celebrating Chanukah without their mother for the very first time. Obviously, the girls have a hard time dealing with the situation. As they are making latkes for Chanukah, they realize how much they miss their mother. Papa reassures the girls that everything will be okay, even without Mama. Papa's Latkes is a really important book because a lot of children have to deal with a parent dying and living life with only one parent. The illustrations in this book are beautiful. Also, Papa's Latkes would be a great book to have in a classroom because it is diverse.

Child of the Warsaw Ghetto by David A. Adler - 0 views

  •
This is a compassionate story about a young boy who is put in an orphanage after his father dies and is then thrown into a walled off part of Warsaw when the Nazi's invaded.  He is eventually thrown into a death camp where he survives, but many were not as lucky.  The pictures really bring the events in the story to life and the story describes how difficult the Nazi invasion was in terms that young children can understand; however, I think that it is too much for younger children to grasp.  This is a great book to introduce struggles that people endure and  as a tool in group discussions.

The Recess Queen - Alexis O'Neill - 0 views

  •
The Recess Queen is a book about a bully on the playground at recess. Her name is Mean Jean and she has total control of the playground. Nobody can do anything before she does; if they do, she gets mad and lets everyone know it. Then, one day a new girl comes to school and changes everything. Katie Sue, the new girl, lets every kid at school know that she does not care what Mean Jean does. She will play whenever she wants and with whatever she wants. The Recess Queen is a great book that lets kids know how to make friends; it seems to say that you should not let people intimidate you. Also, the illustrations in this book are very colorful. A lot of kids are bullied and pushed around by the "Mean Jean's" of the world; after reading The Recess Queen, hopefully many kids can become "Katie Sue's."

Marvin One Too Many - Katherine Paterson - 0 views

  •
Marvin One Too Many is a really good book for children who are struggling to learn. This book is about a boy named Marvin and the struggles he has with reading. When Marvin first arrives at school, he does not have a desk and is one too many; it only gets worse from here. Marvin is the only one in his class who can not read. He often feels left out because of this. The children in his class laugh at Marvin and make fun of him because he can not read. A lot of children who have trouble reading can probably relate to Marvin. Finally with the help of his family, Marvin learns to read and begins to enjoy it! Since this is an "I Can Read Book," many children will be able to read this independently. This book can be found in the Penn State libraries.

The Don't-Give-Up-Kid and Learning Differences by Jeanne Gehret - 0 views

  •
This book is about a boy named Alex who suffers from dyslexia. He doesn't like to go to school because his peers make fun of him for not being able to read. He says that the letters jump around and he is unable to put them back together. He visits the school's psychologist who suggests that he visit Mrs. Baxter's room for kids with learning differences. In Mrs. Baxter's room, Alex finds his own way to learn how to read. He finally decides he likes reading and is determined to eventually read a full book on his own. This book shows children that there are other children out there that struggle with reading too. It also shows them that they can get better at reading as long as they have the help they need. Finally, it conveys the message to kids that they shouldn't give up. If you see a student struggling with reading, this would be a good book to recommend to the parents of that student.

Miss Nelson is Missing by Harry Allard - 0 views

  •
In this story, Miss Nelson's class has trouble following rules and listening to Miss Nelson. Fed up with the misbehavior, Miss Nelson comes up with a plan and "disappears". Since Miss Nelson can't be found, the school call in Viola Swamp. With Viola Swamp in charge, the children find themselves doing twice the amount of homework and losing their storytime. The kids set out to find Miss Nelson to bring her back. Finally, when Miss Nelson comes back, her students are well behaved and appreciate the teacher they have. This book could bring a smile to anyone's face when the students are coming up with ideas of what happened to Miss Nelson. From a teacher's perspective, this could be a good story to read to a class that is having behavior problems.

Cinder Edna by Ellen Jackson - 0 views

  •
This book is filled with contrasts of a new and old fairy tale. The book shows two girls who live next door to each other. One is Cinderella and the other is Cinder Edna. They both have a mean stepmother and stepsisters. But, Edna deals with her problems in stride. When the king has a ball, Cinderella wishes for a fairy godmother to help her get ready for the ball. But, Cinder Ella puts a dress on layaway. Cinderella takes a carriage to the ball, but Cinder Edna takes the bus. Randolph, the king's son, dances with Cinderella. Cinder Edna dances with Randolph's brother Rupert. Rupert runs a recycling plant and a home for orphaned kittens. When the clock strikes midnight, both Cinderella and Cinder Edna have to go home. Randolph did not even know Cinderella's name, but Rupert did know Cinder Edna's name. Cinderella left a glass slipper, but Cinder Edna left a loafer. The brothers find Cinderella and Cinder Edna. When they get married in a double ceremony, they change their names to Ella and Edna. Ella seems to have the perfect life, but she is bored by the ceremonies, speeches, and her perfect husband. Rupert and Edna are the ones who live happily ever after. They live in a cottage and enjoy each other's company. This book shows the superficiality of some fairy tales. The book also shows the importance of making the best of your circumstances in life. The book shows children that a happy couple does not need to be perfect. This would be an excellent book to start a discussion about concentrating on your personality and inner qualities and less on your superficial traits.

Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe is a great book for illustrations. Mufaro has two daughters that are really beautiful. One daughter, Nyasha, is kind, nice, and caring towards others. Manyard is a spoiled brat. The king has to choose one of the daughters to get married to her. Both daughters travel to a city in Africa. However, the king chooses Nyasha to marry him. •
Pinkalicious by Victoria Kann and Elizabeth Kann is a great book. It was a rainy day and there was nothing to do. The girl's mom suggested to make cupcakes. So they did. The girl ate lots of cupcakes. When she woke up the next morning, she was pink. She loved being pink. Then her mom took her to the doctors and said that she had pinkititis. She was not allowed to eat anything pink. She turned red by eating one more cupcake. She ate something green and turned back to normal. Then her brother ate a pink cupcake and he turned pink. Giraffes Can't Dance - Giles Andreae - 0 views

  •
Giraffes Can't Dance is a book about a giraffe named Gerald who has a hard time dancing. Gerald knows that he is bad at dancing, but he gives it a try anyways. When he does try dancing, everyone laughs at him and tells him that giraffes can't dance. Gerald is almost to the point of giving up, but then he hears some encouraging words from a cricket. After listening to the cricket and thinking about what he says, Gerald turns into a really great dancer! One thing I really like about this book is the very colorful and vibrant illustrations. Also, there are rhyming phrases throughout the entire book. Giraffes Can't Dance would be a great book to read in a classroom; it teaches you to always believe in yourself and what you want to do. This book is available through the Penn State libraries.

Degas and the Little Daner by Laurence Anholt - 0 views

  •
This book is about a famous sculpture in an art museum of a little ballerina girl.  The book is told from the museum guard's perspective. He tells the people that visit the museum that the statue is a girl named Maria.  Maria was a little girl who dreamed of being a ballerina at the Paris Opera House.  Her poor parents saved all their money to send her to ballet school.  At ballet school she encountered a famous artist named Degas. Maria got an opportunity to dance in the Paris Opera House but only if she took lessons everyday. Her father became very ill and since he could not work they couldn't afford it.  Then Degas offered to pay Maria to pose for him, but she only made enough to pay for her father's doctor and not dance lessons. The artist reveals that he is going blind and must sculpt her because he can no longer paint.  She never got to perform at the Paris Opera House but two years later the sculpture became very famous. This is a brilliant tale of an actual sculpture of a ballerina by sculpture/painter Edgar Degas. It displays all types of art; dance, performance, sculpture and painting.  This is an excellent book that incorporates fact and fiction of the arts all in one.

My Diary From Here to There / Mi diario de aqui hasta alla by Amada Irma Pérez - 0 views

  •
What a better way to read about a young girl's immagration to the United States than through a diary. Each page even has the Spanish translations after the English. The illustrations are filled with vibrant colors that are pleasing to the eye. This would be a great resource for children to read and understand what some children experience as they move "from here to there".

America, My New Home : Wordsong Poetry by Monica Gunning - 0 views

  •
"America, My New Home" tells a young girl's journey to America through poetry. She compares her new home to her old one in Jamaica in twenty-three different poems. This book shows that you don't have to tell a story the old-fashioned way. You can do it using poetry as well. A great way to get children to write poetry is through a story about themselves like the girl did in the book.
