Michael Anti: Behind the Great Firewall of China | Video on TED.com - 0 views

  • Michael Anti (aka Jing Zhao) has been blogging from China for 12 years. Despite the control the central government has over the Internet -- "All the servers are in Beijing" -- he says that hundreds of millions of microbloggers are in fact creating the first national public sphere in the country's history, and shifting the balance of power in unexpected ways.
  • Michael Anti (Zhao Jing), a key figure in China's new journalism, explores the growing power of the Chinese internet.

Gay marriage bill introduced to Australian parliament - BBC News - 0 views

  •
A controversial bill to legalize same-sex marriage has been introduced to the Australian parliament. The private member's bill comes amid heated debate among government MPs about whether to change the law or put the matter to a plebiscite. The government's official position is that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. This article depicts the theme of globalization. Back in June, the United States Supreme Court ruled the prohibition of gay marriage unconstitutional. The U.S. influenced Australia to now introduce it to their parliament. Since the passing of this law was such a big step in United States history, it made international news, spreading all over the world. When Australians saw this, it influenced them to bring the law to their land. What will the Australian parliament rule? What factors may decide against gay marriage?

North Korea orders border troops into 'wartime state' - CNN.com - 0 views

  •
In this article, it explains the most recent information about the animosity between North and South Korea. As mentioned in the story, the ongoing conflict between the two countries has once again been brought to attention in the beginning of August when South Korean men were injured by North Korean landmines. More recently, South Korea had detected a rocket being launched toward their country. They then responded by firing some shells back toward the area from where the rocket had been launched. This particular event reminds me of the theme of region in geography. This is because the two cultures have always had a long history where they were fighting each other, as was the case in the Korean War. Region itself, is a geographical area based on how a culture functions. Therefore, it is not too much of a surprise that they are once again fighting because it is their natural tendency to fight. I am sure that this is just the beginning of this current conflict and that there will be more trouble for these countries in the future.

Which Reading Skills are Critical to Learn in the Ninth Grade? | MindShift | KQED News - 0 views

  • “They’re all great readers,” she said, noting that nearly 90 percent are reading at grade level. “But I have a hard time getting them to engage with the text, read for understanding and deeper meaning. I have a hard time getting them to read and think and write critically about fiction and nonfiction alike.”
  • “No matter your major — accounting, business, marketing, history, you name it — making connections between what you’ve read in the past, current events and what you’re reading for class is essential,” Moore said.
  •
Why do your teachers ask you to text mark, annotate, etc. while you read? Check out this article.
  •
They want us to be able to analyze what we read - not to just place it in the context of the story, but to make connections, look for symbols, etc. Thar way, the text gains a deeper meaning instead of 'we're reading this just because it's a book we were told to read', it's we're reading this because it's an excellent example of symbolism and character development - which you might not pick up on unless you were analyzing the text. Suddenly, a book you were told to read has more meaning because now you know why you are reading it and why it is important to your education. Like how we have to look for the themes of geography in our books. If we were just reading the book, I would be done faster, but I would wonder why, exactly, was this book going to be important for my continuing education. This makes me pay attention to details and make connections to the textbook section you gave us. Education fascinates me because it is so important, yet people have so many different views on how everything should be done and whether or not the current system works.
  •
Thank you for your insight, Maddie. I agree! Reading with a purpose helps build our framework as to what should be gained from the book. Annotations help document thoughts and ideas on our mind so we don't forget, too. Happy reading to all.

Panoram Italia - The Scenic Railway of the Brenner Pass - 4 views

  •
One of the most amazing landscapes I've ever seen ...  How can geography impact the diffusion of culture?
  •
I believe geography plays a big role in the diffusion of culture of the Brenner Pass. This Pass has a unique history in which it was connected by two major dictators, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. Due to the connection of these major dictators many cultures in this area are also connected. For example this Pass is located in Italy, but over 80% of its population claims Germany as its first language. In addition, because this Pass is located on the exterior of Italy it becomes a hotspot for cultural diffusion. The reason for this is because locals from Italy can travel to other nations and express their culture by using the Brenner Pass. Also, many foreigners from other nations, such as Austria or Germany, can travel into Italy, using the Brenner Pass, and express their culture as well. This expression of culture can be seen due to the names of the various stations, tunnels, and viaducts. The names of the stations, tunnels and, viaducts have German names which represent the diffusion of culture from Germany to Italy. By examining the Brenner Pass it is clear to see how its geography can impact its diffusion of culture.
  •
Well done! Has anyone ever traveled on the Brenner Pass?

That wonderful video was definitely wonderful and you've inspired me to make empanadas now in my own home now. And by empanadas I mean samosas.
  •
I loved how the website was very easy to navigate, plus the food looks really good, i might have to make it myself.
  •
The food looked really good, I may have to make it myself this weekend! Your video was very good and your website was very easy to navigate. Wonderful Job!!
  •
I really enjoyed watching your video! I like how it was entertaining but also informative. I also enjoyed learning about how Empanadas diffused to several spanish areas. It is great that you have the recipe so that others can make empanadas on their own. Over all, great job! Your website was interesting as well as informative.
  •
Awesome job with the video, very informative and entertaining. Overall good content and interesting view on the food taboos. Great quote at 1:34 "Like my mom always told me, if you cut your finger off, it's gonna bleed"
  •
I enjoyed watching your video which was well done and looked delicious! I also found the liver and onion dish as a taboo to be interesting because of how it is accepted in some regions and not others. It seems it is more widely accepted in areas that are influenced by folk culture rather than popular culture, which is funny because many things are eaten in a popular cultural society that are worse for you and contain more chemicals than the natural liver of a cow.

The Evolution of Techno, Rock, and Bollywood music - 11 views

I knew almost nothing about all of these topics but I learned a lot from the insightful information and the cool videos! Thanks for sharing!
  •
This was a great website with lots of useful information about folk and popular music. I learned a lot from this awesome site about the wide variety of folk culture music from the cool videos and descriptions.
  •
I've always "liked rock" but never really knew that much about it. The British Invasion reminds me of the theme of diffusion.
  •
I liked learning about all of your different musical preferences and how they have all evolved over the years! Its all very fascinating! (and PS Noah, you said Skillet instead of Skrillex at the top of your page.)
  •
I like how your website views on the preferences of multiple people and then gives a brief history on how that music diffused into pop culture.
  •
I liked how your website was very organized and easy to navigate. I also liked how you talked about how the music genres diffused from folk culture to popular culture.

Northern Ireland hears an echo of itself in Israeli-Palestinian conflict - 4 views

  •
3 main ideas of the article: -Ultimately, Northern Ireland is a very small place, with a lot of madness, and in this sense it is also very similar to Israel. -Peace in Northern Ireland is there, but it's an unsettled peace. -Protestants, many descendants of Scottish and English settlers, see themselves in the Israelis' position - staking a righteous, ancient claim to territory in defiance of a force they view as bloodthirsty insurgents, the Irish Republican Army. This article talks about how there is still some unsettled people in all of Ireland, regarding religion. Also, during the unsettled peace, there are some incidents between Protestants and Roman Catholics, that connects to the Palestine-Israel conflict today. Will there be another religious war in Ireland?
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
I liked this article because it talks about how the Ireland and Israeli-Palestine conflicts are not much different. With Catholics acting as Palestinians and Protestants acting as Israelis. In my opinion, the dispute will most likely keep getting worse until it hits a climax and a war between the religious groups over the land will break out.
  •
It reminds me of the book I read, "Angela's Ashes" where the author mentions the stereotypes about Protestants that the Roman Catholics held even though these people weren't part of the conflict so long ago. The article is a reminder that history often repeats itself.
  •
I liked how this article talked about two different conflicts and made a connection between the two. I also read Angela's Ashes, and it discussed the same religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants. Both of these issues signify the importance or meaning of territory to a religion, especially universal religions because of the hearth or birthplace. They have expanded and now try to return to the hearth which creates conflict as there are already people who have inhabited the area.

Religious Discord Menaces Mideast as Israel-Palestinian Peacemaking Fails - Businessweek - 1 views

  • An undercurrent of religious strife has burst to the fore in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, threatening to turn a political battle over land into a war of faiths between Muslim and Jew.
  • “If a political conflict is transformed into a religious war between Muslims and Jews, it becomes impossible to solve since religious problems tend to be absolutist.”
  • The radicals’ growing influence has changed the face of the Arab world, a change that “is also happening very quickly now in Palestinian society,” Ben-Zur said. In this combustible environment, Israeli officials must avoid actions or comments that can be interpreted as anti-Muslim, especially where the Jerusalem shrine is concerned, he said.
  •
This article is about the Palestinian conflict we have been discussing in class, and how it seems to be turning from a racial to a religious war, changing from bad to worse. How much longer can this region go before full-out war begins? What other countries may be dragged into a possible war?
  •
I think because of the histories of the two places and the fact that what is happening now is because of years of increasing tensions and dangerous conditions, this conflict will not be solved soon, and because of that, it will only get worse. Both groups want the territory, but one group was placed there (the Jewish people by the British) so they spread and began to dominate, claiming it as theirs.
  •
I agree with Alex, the tension in this region is historic and recently rekindled with the insertion of Israel back into this area. The conflict there is essentially a time bomb on its final countdown and is not likely to be dismantled before it goes off. From my perspective there is no way to stop it unless one religion is removed which is even more impossible.

Top 10 Reasons behind America's Superpower Status - TopYaps - 2 views

  •
Different empires have ruled a major portion of the planet in different eras of world history. The Romans, Ottomans, English, Mongols, French, Russians, Germans and many others enslaved nations, dynasties and millions of people whenever they had the chance. At any point in time, there has been only one 'super' power in the world and today, it's America.

How long has mankind been waging germ warfare? - 0 views

  •
I find it interesting that this article can be related to multiple themes, depending on how you perceive it. This topic and the idea of germ arsenals could be incredibly deadly and has the potential, if used in the future, to obliterate entire groups of people leaving them vulnerable and their homelands verminous.

I liked the entire page, it was easy to use, which is wonderful. Information involved was very informative, which is great for an informative site
  •
Your website was really cool and had a great use of pictures and placement of information! One connection I noticed in your work that was learned in our class activities, when we took notes from the book, was from the picture of the Eskimos wearing boots, because the book talked about that people living in colder areas might wear boots.
  •
This is a very creative website that shows all different types of clothing styles all around the world. I like your presentation with all the clothes, it looked like a lot of fun to make!
  •
I really enjoyed viewing the folk clothes from different places in the world. It's amazing how different they all are from place to place.

I love the site! my favorite part was the Eskimos who have the right idea about how to bundle up in this weather. They also rock a nice fashion style. Makes me wish I could wear dead animals in school. Great job!
  •
It is interesting to see what clothing around the world looks like when it is not influenced by popular fashion styles. The pictures on your website are neat and the website is east to navigate. Great job!

  •
Your website was very well put together and informative and you guys can pull off those folk outfits really well! haha Great job!
  •
I really enjoyed learning about the different regions you chose and the clothing they wear. I found similarities with the website I created because of the South American clothing, and how some clothing was influenced by immigrants. I also made a connection with what we learned in class being that a popular clothing item in developed regions is the UGG boot, which was inspired by folk clothing in arctic regions.
  •
I liked how well organized and informative your website is. In addition to the hijab, I know that women in the Middle East also wear burkas (which were in the top picture) as well as chadors.
  •
I enjoyed this website a lot! I thought it was very interesting to see how different the dress is in places all over the world, as well as the impact that the environment has on style of clothing. Your website is organized and overall very well done! Great job!
