'Suicide,' 'catastrophe': Nicaraguans in US terrified of looming end of protections - 5 views

  •
This makes me wonder what I would do if I was an immigrant losing that protected status; go back to a country that is deadly or stay here illegally?
  •
If I was an immigrant and put in this position I would stay here illegally in America because I value my life and I disagree with sending all these people back to their deaths, there needs to be another way.

Trump has many motivations -- but power rules them all - CNNPolitics - 5 views

  •
"Critics are protesting that his move reveals political shallowness, subverts the justice system and sends a message to aides under duress from special counsel Robert Mueller. But Trump seems to be saying,"I have this power, so why not use it?""
  •
When you have as much power as the president does, you must be very mindful. Pardons should be a rare thing and a thing that happens when an injustice has been prosecuted to a fair person who feels wrong about their actions. Trump is throwing around pardons like rolls at the dinner table. When you do that, it makes it seem like everyone, no matter the crime, deserves another chance, especially if they are on Trump's side. When you let power get to your head the way Trump is, instead of a democracy, it starts to feel more like a dictatorship.
  •
Dinesh served his time on community service by teaching people English that are seeking citizenship. Trumps presidency has been covered more widely than previous presidents but Obama granted 212 pardons and 1715 commutations so he's not going mad with power. he's doing his job. It's a good thing we're being critical and covering everything. But I don't think he's acting widely or crazy. America isn't a democracy by the way.

3d Guns - 15 views

"The owner of a company that builds 3D-printed guns said he has begun selling blueprints of the weapons to elude a court order on Monday that banned him from giving the plans away for free."

Yeah, I thought that this was interesting. I read this at home. I'm just concerned that people will be using these for illegal reasons, though.
  •
I thought that this article was very interesting in the fact that someone found a way to create guns using a 3-D printer. I do however think that this wasn't the best thing to do in today's day in age with all of the school shootings going on and the debate between that, and the fact that anyone can buy the blueprints for any price is a little on the scary side.
  •
Yes I agree with"Brooke Wohlers" the whole 3-D printing guns is very scary with everything happening today. I believe it should not be allowed for many reasons of school shootings.
  •
The fact that now people can just 3-D print a gun just makes me feel that the gun-related violence will rise.
  •
It was always a cool idea of someone making a 3-D printed gun (or 3-D printed anything), but now that it is a very realistic thing it is kind of alarming that anyone with with a 3-D printer can make one and not have a permit to carry especially if these 3-D printed guns can be as harmful as others. Cody Wilson, The founder of of Defense Distributed, said he would sell the the blueprints. That is easy access to anyone that has the money.
  •
You could really print anything with a 3d printer. It is scary the things you can do.

There's a new No. 1 among 2020 Democrats - CNNPolitics - 1 views

Zika virus used to treat aggressive brain cancer - BBC News - 4 views

  •
So since there is one virus is helping us then maybe other viruses could help us solve other viruses.
  •
This could help change science and how we know it forever. It could help in so many ways.
  •
If this zika virus is used to fight/treat aggressive brain cancer are there long term side effects or anything that could go wrong with treating brain cancer with another virus?

Puerto Rico schools may not reopen for weeks - CNN - 6 views

  •
The fact Trump is sitting there on twitter criticizing them and not helping to try to make it better is horrible, He's being extremely rude and it's almost embarrassing to even say he's our President. It sounds as though things are starting to get better in Puerto Rico, but they still need help.
  •
This is a miracle. It's amazing that these people are ok. There is things that need rebuilt but the damage wasn't as bad as I was thinking it was going to be.

puerto rico needs help and trump needs to be the one to do it

We need real gun control so stuff like this doesn't happen as often, he bought guns himself! They need to increase the age on getting a gun, many background checks even mental history before giving a "broken" child a gun. This is a real issue.
  •
US government should think about gun control seriously, we should not have this accident any more.
  •
At the end of this article they called Cruz a "broken child" and I do not like when people refer to him as that because I feel as if they use that as a way of trying to justify what he did which is wrong to me.

I think that the law enforcement did the right thing and got these terrible people for what they did to those kids.
  • ...11 more comments...

I agree that the law enforcement did do the right thing but I also think that it was good that the daughter did escape and called the police, or else they might not of gotten the help they needed in the first place.
  •
I heard about this all over the internet such as facebook, snapchat, etc... and i believe the law enforcement did the right thing and saved many lives that day.
  •
This is so very sad. I have been reading about this and in one article I read it said all the kids could keep a diary. They believe the parents could be faced with more charges.
  •
We talk about this story in ROTC. It's very sad, but even though how scared that girl must of been she did a great thing and saved her life, and her siblings life.
  •
This looks like something off of criminal minds, I watch it all the time and this is actually something that would happen on there. That's crazy people are so heartless
  •
This is very sad but they got the right punishment and glad everyone was safe!
  •
I think this is repulsive and terrible however the authorities did do the right thing
  •
This story is very sad and scary. But I would probably not love my sister after knowing that all this happened. Considering the fact that she never got to see her sisters children that she really badly wanted to see.
  •
I think it is very strange how the sister didn't catch on to any of the strange actions that happened when she was there and that no one even questioned the fact that they were never allowed any further than the driveway with no contact with the kids for years.
  •
I think the police did the right things but I don't understand how no one noticed the kids didn't come out of the house or didn't hear them.
  •
They cops did the right thing but the sister shouldn't have been so oblivious.
  •
    Bump
  •
I believe that what the law did was the right thing, but however, the sister should've been more suspicious and paid closer attention to the signs or even try entering the house.

What's changed a month after the Parkland shooting - CNN - 22 views

  •
"A month ago, a former student roamed the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, opening fire on terrified students and teachers at the Florida school."
  • ...2 more comments...
  •
Students will continue to fight to have stronger gun control laws.
  •
nothing is going to be changed until there are more fatalities
  •
not much has changed, at least at a federal level
  •
It seems like there is an agreement that there needs to be a change in how firearms and school shootings are dealt with but there is disagreement as to how legislation will do that. There has been no federal reform but while there has been legislation passed in Florida, many teachers and school districts are rejecting it due to its suggestion of arming teachers. There seems to be a divide on whether guns are the problem or the people are the problem.

Elon Musk is Selling Flamethrowers - Bloomberg - 5 views

  •
How do you all feel about items/weapons like these being readily available and advertised?
  • ...10 more comments...
  •
I saw the merchandise he was selling on Twitter, and it's quite fascinating at the amount of sales he's generated from these products. I think Elon holds so much influence over people that he's able to create a product, and immediately gain success from it. According to the article, the weapon does not violate any limits, so citizens should have the right to own such a weapon.
  •
I think flame throwers are a little extreme
  •
I think it is completely ridiculous to allow citizens to own a flamethrower. Who in their right mind thinks "hey it would be a nice day to carry this flamethrower around"? By selling these weapons you're just asking for issues.
  •
For what reason would anybody need a flamethrower?
  •
i think it woukd be cool to have a flamethrower even if i dont need it, it still would be cool
  •
I dont understand why someone would ever need a flamethrower, but it is cool
  •
Its not like anyone can just order one. First of they have to have the money to order one and they would have to go through some sort of screening to make sure its not some psychopath getting it.
  •
    Elon is... interesting...
  •
I can see he is selling flamethrowers for that tunnel project, but can't you sell something besides flamethrowers. Like girl scout cookies?
  •
I like flamethrowers it's funny how there is fire extingusihers underneath
  •
As long as he is following all the rules that come along with manufacturing and selling weapons I feel like he should be able to do it. Yes a flamethrower is a little on the extreme side but as long he is staying within the realm of the law I feel like it should be allowed.
  •
Flamethrowers are like guns so if the person buying the flamethrower is able to buy a gun then they should be able to purchase this as well.

Alabama death row inmate Vernon Madison gets reprieve - CNN - 5 views

  •
"Given Alabama's rejection of judicial override, the death sentence in this case constitutes cruel and unusual punishment and violates Mr. Madison's rights to a jury, fair and reliable sentencing and to due process and equal protection of the laws as guaranteed by the Fifth, Sixth, Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments of the United States Constitution and Alabama law," they wrote in their petition."
  •
I understand that Madison has become mentally ill and doesn't have memory of the crime he committed, but he still committed the crime and was sentenced to the death penalty at first. However, due to an Alabama law no longer allowing the death penalty I think life without parole would be a good alternative for him.
  •
"Mr. Madison suffers from vascular dementia as a result of multiple serious strokes in the last several years, and no longer has a memory of the commission of the crime for which he is to be executed," How does this make the crimes he has committed go away?

Poll: Trump approval falls as majority of Americans brace for recession - POLITICO - 1 views

  •
Even if his approval rating drops at all, I don't believe people are going to stop saying he's a "great" president.
  •
I think it's interesting that the article claims Americans are bracing for a recession. We have a record high DOW Jones stock, unemployment is decreasing (more than 20 million new jobs since 2010), and Americans, in general, have more money in their pockets than we did 3 years ago. https://ig.ft.com/sites/numbers/economies/us/ It also piques my interest that the article claims the Trump approval rating as a whole is falling. After the democratic debates, Donald Trump has only increased in followership, rally attendance, etc. This is the reason people keep saying he's a "great" president. You might not like him as a person, I might not like him as a person, but if he continues to put a dent in the public debt, and continues to uphold basic constitutionalist ideals, he will continue to see success in America. I think it's interesting and I predict that the 2020 election will play out very similarly to the 2016 election. The democratic party did everything in their power to stop Trump from becoming president. Both Republicans and Democrats alike turned to personal attacks and scandals. Even if all the candidates are bad, we have to pick the best one. Trump was able to win against the Democrats because they didn't have any solid plans with evidence for the policies they wanted to implement. Trump has an upper-hand because he's never changed too. Democrats have flipped like no other when it comes to policies because they are desperate to be approved of by the younger masses. Trump has always supported a smaller government, focused on the economy, and wanted stricter foreign relations. The same cannot be said about Democrats, their talking points are that of enabling a welfare state, stripping citizens of their 2nd amendment rights, and their false sense of acceptance. tl;dr: orange man bad, but doing his job well.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has a point about the Electoral College (Opinion) - CNN - 5 views

  •
"Trump's path to a second term would most likely come in the same fashion that his first term did -- an Electoral College victory and a popular vote loss. Recent analysis suggests that Trump could lose the popular vote by as many as 5 million votes, but still win the Electoral College."
  •
Maybe I don't understand it well enough, but to me, it doesn't make sense that a presidential candidate can lose the popular vote (you know, the one everyone gets a say in) by such a large margin, but *still* win because of the Electoral College. It doesn't seem legit like someone could simply go for the states with the most votes, and then they have a bigger chance of winning even if the majority don't necessarily like them.
  •
There's a reason that the Electoral College exists. The United States was founded as a democratic-republic. Meaning that we elect representation that decides on the issues. We do not have a direct democracy, and we never have. All the good presidents back to Abraham Lincoln were elected this way. The reason we have an electoral college is to establish a democracy while still protecting the rights of minorities. A purely popular vote system could encourage certain states to modify voter requirements, as it would directly affect the national vote. Statistically, having to win multiple sub-elections is a more effective measure than one large one. It's why we count who won and who lost in sports instead of total points that season.

Trump budget calls for billions for border wall with Mexico - 5 views

  •
President Trump's discretionary budget plan set to be released Thursday reportedly includes a request for $2.6 billion in funding to begin planning and building a "physical wall" along the border with Mexico along with security funding. The Wall Street Journal reported that Tump will ask Congress for billions in new spending to be earmarked ofr immigration enforcement.
  • ...4 more comments...
  •
Trump thinks he'll be able to persuade mexico to build the wall. He's crazy for thinking that. Why would they want to help fund for the wall when they don't want be even leave the United States. There's no way he'll be able to persuade them.
  •
I doubt Mexico will at all consider paying for the wall, it's just not their problem.
  •
I doubt that Mexico will pay for it because Trump is the one who wants it up, not them.
  •
What will Trump do if they refuse to pay?
  •
I don't think Trump actually thought about what would need to happen to make his precious wall when he was campaigning. I think he was more focused on getting the position and making everything sound good and now that it's time to step up to the plate HE created, he's trying to find anyway to get the money needed to fill said plate. He wants to cut so many programs and he expects others to pay and he just has his expectation bar to high. The border wall he wants to make would take $21 billion dollars! That's a lot of money to raise and I just can't help but think, what are the consequences of the actions he's willing to take to make that money appear.
  •
Who is going to pay for the wall?
