Modern Sophistication in New York City's Upper West Side - 1 views

  • The minimal, contemporary dining room allows the impressive Manhattan skyline to take center stage.
  • In the six-year-old boy’s room, a custom window seat with drawer provides even more storage for toys.
  •
Today we return to the work of Frances Herrera, the inimitable New York interior designer behind Interiors by Francesca, LLC. Working with a young, sophisticated family in the Upper West Side, Herrera transformed a blank slate into a comfortable, kid-friendly home that exudes an unquestionably chic, cozy and polished sense of style.

Kaohsiung Cruise Terminal / Emergent - 1 views

  •
The design for the Kaohsiung Cruise Terminal by Emergent is interior driven, biasing building section, and interior spatial effects. The goal is to create a cavernous space which will appear simultaneously massive and lightweight. The project oscillates between volume and surface, avoiding the limitations of exclusively surface-based and volume-based architectures. The Port Services Center, made up of string of hard elliptical volumes, is pushed down into the soft bubble of the Ferry Terminal, so that exterior skin becomes interiorized. This nesting action allows for functional division between the programmatic elements while creating complex interior formations. While the Ferry Terminal is oriented towards the inside, the Port Services Center- consisting primarily of offices- is oriented towards the outside, with views out to the city and the ocean. It is a building within a building. The skin of the Ferry terminal is constructed out of transparent ETFE membrane and hard fiber-composite Armor Plates. These Armor Plates operate as both structure and ornament. They create stiff zones in the skin where the membrane can be affixed. Ultimately, the construction system is a hybrid of shell and membrane construction types- what we now call Shell-branes. A pattern of color flows over the armor, both responding to underlying formal features, and at times becoming graphic. Similar to a butterfly wing, coloration follows competing criteria, such as structural and optical pattern logics. Gradient effects begin to blur boundaries between opacities and transparencies, creating unifying visual crossovers between the two systems of the Shell-brane. The open space to east and west of the buildable area is designed as new kind of park, which does infrastructural work as well as supporting the picturesque. It is an organic machine, where energy is cultivated and grown inside algae photo-bioreactor pods. Using sunlight as well as artificial light at night, these pods gener

Home Decor: Fall Design Trends - 1 views

  • Updating home accessories and decor is the simplest way to update the overall look of any room in your home. Home accessories, being relatively inexpensive, are an easy way to incorporate changing interior design and home decor trends into your space. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to invest in trends in pieces that can easily be swapped out as they change, rather than investing in large, trendy items. Here are some of this fall’s trendiest home decor items and ideas.
  • Eclectic Looks This year, eclectic items that are mixed and matched in a single space are extremely trendy. For example, a living room in which this style is used could include a fireplace mantel that features a Buddha head, apothecary jars, tea light candles, a hanging oval mirror and an assortment of African style carved statues. The eclecticism makes the space visually interesting. The great thing about this particular home decor trend is that it can be incorporated into a number of styles. There are dozens of different takes and you simply can’t choose the wrong item when it comes to eclectic looks.

textual thoughts: Guest Post - Arcadian Lighting - 2 views

  • Decorating your home in all mid-century style might be a little too Mad Men for our contemporary lives. Adding a few mid-century modern touches—chairs, tables, light fixtures, textiles—can bring Mad Men (and now Pan Am) style into your décor without transporting your home back a few decades. We're happy to share some of our favorite ways to add mid-century modern touches to any décor.
  • Interior Style Along with mid-century modern furniture, mid century modern textiles are a chic way to add mid-century modern touches to a room, sofa, bed or table. Marimekko, the Finnish textile company, sells its mid-century patterned fabrics still today.

DESIGN my heart out: guest post: Brilliant Hues - 1 views

  • Love the pops of brilliant color based off of the beautiful modern portrait in this Hollywood Regency style living room. Jewel tone fuchsia and yellow look amazing next to gold accents. Love the asymmetrical look of the chandelier used in this space.
  •
My focus today is on brilliant hues, those colors that zing with intensity, adding energy and style to a space. These intense colors can have a big impact in a room so if you aren't feeling brave and bold, use them as accent colors in decorative accessories or lighting fixtures.
