You know you have been in Finland too long, when... - 4 views

How you know you have been to long in xy. The Finnish version. My favorite is 33. You accept that 80°C in a sauna is chilly, but 20°C outside is freaking hot. Quite a lot of them are outdated, esp. about opening hours of shops, and one is definitely missing. Your normal mealtime has shifted to 11am for lunch and 5pm for dinner. But don't worry, it's a really comfy place here, isnt' it Jose??

well somethings you get used to in a year (like salmiakki or koskenkorva) others don't (seriously, lunch at 11?!?!)
  •
But what stage are you in already, Luzi?
  •
I would say a 50% Finn. I do have lunch at 11am, every working day, an 80 degrees sauna indeed is just a warm room. But I will never get used to salmiakki (which is just literally eating a cleaning agent!!) and you can imagine that "silence is fun" is not really MY motto...
  •
True?? 22. You understand why the Finnish language has no future tense. No, I don't think I ever will understand that one... Finns are quite future-oriented at two particular times of the year. On the day after Midsummer (see above), they say "Well, it's all downhill from now on" and prepare feverishly for winter, and similarly after December 21st they perk up and start thinking about Midsummer - ignoring the fact that they still have to get through January, February and March before the place becomes inhabitable again...
  •
... Finnish language has no future tense. That's true
  •
everything expressed with "tomorrow I go to " or "in one year" etc? what about the distinction between to future events, one conditional on the other?

Dronestagr.am launches to showcase the world's best aerial drone pix - 4 views

  •
Demand for drones is exploding! Dupin wants to aggregate aerial imagery from around the globle at Dronestagr.am. In the near future we could experience something close to google maps, made with aerial pictures.

Fun, but what would be the added benefit over high resolution satellite images?
  •
Remember that drones have top-view camera and front-view camera which gives more possibilities in terms of what you can do with collected data. With such a huge database and a little bit of 3D geometry we could get e.g. a 3D map of the world... I guess google can derive something like that already from their streetview images however obviously street view covers some relatively small part of the globe and also can not access places that UAV can.
  •
Here there's an example of a 3D picture of Tokyo (in high resolution). It is not made by drones, but I think it is something we can use them for. http://360gigapixels.com/tokyo-tower-panorama-photo/

How I became a Foursquare cyberstalker | Technology | The Guardian - 0 views

  • Foursquare is now being widely touted as the app which will, after years of anticipation and prediction, mark the beginning of "life as a game" computing. Whatever you do, wherever you go, you will be scoring points, earning "medals", and be in, at the very least, social competition with other users around you.
  • Privacy seems to be very low down their priorities. In theory, if every user knows the risks, this is fine. But they just don't. It's being targeted at 18 to 25-year-olds. Facebook was forced in the end to change its default privacy settings due to public concerns. Foursquare should do the same. Some people are even checking in when they're at home. Think of the implications. It's crazy
  • Recruitment is a form of stalking, I suppose. But I can now see the negative implications of Foursquare in the real world.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Ten days ago Foursquare reached the two-million-users landmark, just three months after it had reached the one-million mark. A week earlier, the company received $20m in venture capital from a who's who of Silicon Valley luminaries. It appears the trajectory for Foursquare is only upwards. But as the critical mass of Foursquare users swells and intensifies over the coming months and years, the concerns over privacy are likely to magnify. In June, Webroot, a Denver-based internet security firm, surveyed 1,645 users of "geo-location-ready mobile devices", including 624 in the UK: 29% said they shared their location with people other than their friends; 31% said they accepted a friend request from a stranger; and, yet, 55% still said they were worried about their loss of privacy.
  •
anybody here using Foursquare already? Location is supposed to be "the future" (this time)

    what would be todays equivalents?
  •
Ha! The one about the horse is that "in 100 years there will be people who've never seen a live horse in their lives" :-) Actually it's more than true now with children asking my mother who works in the school "so, do those kangaroos really exist"? Children are fed with so much realistic BS on TV (dinosaur parks etc.) that they can hardly tell the difference between fiction and reality. If you already have offspring: have they seen, say, a live cow or chicken already? (This is most probably a reference to the quote: "Horse is as everyone can see")
  •
    >what would be todays equivalents? Hmmm... what about technology forecasts?
  •
ah. that makes sense. what about the one where they're having dinner then?
  •
No idea... another one I don't get is the one with the waiter presenting some small black-white thing to the white hair guy on a chair.

Heisenbergs Dog, the foundation of quantum computing - 1 views

  •
A Heisenberg's dog is the central unit in a quantum computer that factors prime numbers. We report the outcome of a proof-of-principle Gedankenexperiment in which the number 3 was factored and good agreement was found both with an analytical theoretical prediction and with the results of a quantum Las Vegas calculation. Other future applications of Heisenberg's dog are hinted at. The anonymous reports of the referees and our reply to them are reproduced in appendix A and appendix B respectively.

The page itself should be awarded with the ugliest layout. I have suggested to our management the implementation of the random promotion. Perhaps it is the future of democracy: representatives chosen at random.
  •
you mean "your management" at your current place?
  •
Yes, it is not what is written? Indeed, it is already implemented. You are talking with the director of the Institute. I have been unlucky with the toss.

Rat Neurons Grown On A Computer Chip Fly A Simulated Aircraft - 1 views

  •
This could become quite relevant in future control systems if the setup can be made simple to keep alive and stable. I was doing some follow-up on a story about people controlling aircraft with their brainwaves (through EEG) when I ran into this really cool story. The idea of growing the neurons in patterns is incidentally very similar to the Physarium slime-mold stuff that Dario and me were curious about a little while ago.
  •
I think we already had a discussion on this during a wednesday meeting :P
  •
Oh, I thought that was on the little robot that was controlled by rat neurons and bumped into EVERYTHING. The interesting thing here is that they add a surface patterning (with some kind of nutrient) to control the growth of cells. (Maybe that is not new either, though.)
