The "Invent with Python" Blog - Nobody Wants to Learn How to Program - 3 views

  •
I frequently see a problem when people (especially techies) try to teach programming to someone (especially non-techies). Many programming tutorials begin with basic programming principles: variables, loops, data types. This is both an obvious way to teach programming and almost certainly a wrong way to teach programming. It's wrong because nobody wants to learn how to program

Internet Observatory - 3 views

  •
Internet Observatory is a free service that monitors global traffic 24 hours a day in several regions of the world. Unlike ipoque's Internet studies that have been a reliable source for Internet traffic statistics ever since they were first published in 2006, Internet Observatory is not jus a snapshot of Internet traffic patterns during a certain time period. It is traffic statistics in real-time. But see yourself.

Can We Fix Computer Science Education in America?
  •
Doug, thank you for the link to the article. I just spent a few days in Boston with CS Educators at the App Inventor Summit and the issues discussed in this article now make more sense to me. The CS Principles project (csprinciples.org) looks like a huge step in the right direction. It "could" become the foundation of introductory CS courses in high school (AP) and in post-secondary. They have run 2 years of pilot courses and it looks promising. The next generation AP exam will likely be language agnostic - designs will likely be expressed in pseudocode and the course really engages with students (not just programming).

Spring Cleaning for Your Computer: Evacuate PC Dust Bunnies - 2 views

  •
If your PC's been humming along under your desk for more than a year or two, I've got news for you: Chances are inside that case, half a dozen dust bunnies are dancing around your hard drive, leeching onto your CPU fan and fluttering about your motherboard having a grand old time. This is not good.
