Social Bonding and Nurture Kinship - Available | Maximilian Holland - 0 views

  •
"The debate (such as it is) about cultural versus sociobiological approaches to kinship in anthropology is a rather divisive issue… a clash between incommensurate paradigms, holding as they may, completely incompatible ideas about human nature - Philip Thomas, Anthropologist

Resolving this decades long divide, Social Bonding and Nurture Kinship unites cultural and biological approaches to social life and kinship. The synthesis is non-reductive, respecting the core tenets of both paradigms, and also incorporates psychological attachment theory into the account."

New Bolivian law poses serious challenges for mining companies | MINING.com - 0 views

  •
"This month Bolivia passed the world's first ruling that grants all nature equal rights to humans. The "Law of Mother Earth," agreed by politicians and grassroots social groups, redefines the South American nation's mineral deposits as "blessings" and is supposed to lead to radical new conservation and social measures to reduce pollution and control industry."

Janelle Orsi | Sustainable Economies Law Center - 0 views

"To most law students and lawyers, practicing transactional law isn't an obvious path to saving the world. But as the world's economic and ecological meltdowns demand that we redesign our livelihoods, our enterprises, our communities, our organizations, our food system, our housing, and much more, transactional lawyers are needed, en masse, to aid in an epic reinvention of our economic system.

This reinvention is referred to by many names-the "sharing economy," the "grassroots economy," the "new economy." This new economy facilitates community ownership, localized production, sharing, cooperation, small scale enterprise, and the regeneration of economic and natural abundance. Sharing economy lawyers make the exploding numbers of social enterprises, cooperatives, urban farms, cohousing communities, time banks, local currencies, and the vast array of unique organizations arising from the sharing economy possible and legal."

"Down the road only a few generations, the millennium of Magna Carta, one of the great events in the establishment of civil and human rights, will arrive. Whether it will be celebrated, mourned, or ignored is not at all clear."

Designing the Future Economy | CATALYST - Strategic Design Review - 0 views

  •
Can we design an economy that provides for everyone? In contrast to the current economic design that is limited to recording exchanges among property owners and therefore excludes the misery of people and the degradation of the planet, this article proposes a civic economics of provision that is inclusive and respectful of both. In a provisionary economy, money would flow toward those systems of provision that are critical for human well being and sustainability.

An English version of the book, which I have co-edited with Helfrich, will be coming soon.  Levellers Press, a small publisher in Massachusetts with a deep commitment to the commons and innovative publishing, will release The Wealth of the Commons:  A World Beyond Market and State, in September.  The English version of the book will be about 90% the same as the German version, with a handful of additional essays and a few of the German ones omitted.  Both books are being published under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license.

Executive Summary - Opening Pandora's Box | Gaia Foundation - 0 views

  •
MINING, OIL and GAS: the impact of these extractive industries has always raised serious social and environmental concerns. However, this report signals a wake-up call to the fact that, today, the scale, expansion and acceleration of these industries are far greater than most of us realise. We are no longer talking about isolated pockets of destruction and pollution. Nowadays, chances are that, no matter where you live on Earth, land acquisitions for mining, oil and gas might soon be at your door. This trend is now a major driver of land grabbing globally, and poses a significant threat to the world's indigenous communities, farmers and local food production systems, as well as to precious water, forests, biodiversity, critical ecosystems and climate change.

Download the book | Viral Spiral - 0 views

  •
One of the big themes of Viral Spiral is the enormous value generated from making one's work openly available on the Internet. While publishing traditionalists are skeptical of this new reality, a number of pioneering authors and publishers have shown the commercial appeal of posting their books online using one or another Creative Commons licenses. Among the more notable authors are Cory Doctorow, Lawrence Lessig, James Boyle, Yochai Benkler, Dan Gillmor and Peter Barnes. In the same spirit, New Press has authorized the following download of the text of Viral Spiral. I hope that anyone who has the chance to browse through the PDF version of the book will want to buy a hard copy.
