Propaganda is a significant and common psychological technique of control. Propaganda is used heavily in 1984 and was very prevalent around the time George Orwell wrote 1984 as it was the Cold War. In 1984 the party chooses exactly what to tell the public. The propaganda machine (located in the Ministry of Truth) constantly changes old material/news/statistics to reflect their current position on any subject from chocolate rations, loyalty or specific individuals . The more basic forms of propaganda of propaganda; such as the two minuets of hate, hate week, posters, slogans. If propaganda rules all information, it is impossible to have any grasp on reality. The world is as the party defines it.

This propaganda links directly to the propaganda Orwell was faced with during the writing of 1984. As Orwell was living in Britain, the British were the first to develop and extensive system of war propaganda. In the latter part of WW1, the department of information was formed to coordinate the governments propaganda efforts. The British government's encouragement of "The Red Scare" propaganda against the soviet union took form in movies, books, comics, and was even taught in school. The propaganda used be the British government is reminiscent of the propaganda endorsed by the Party in 1984.

In todays society propaganda surrounds "2012" or "then end of the world". America is the leading provider of propaganda on the end of the world. This propaganda includes news reports, T.V shows, survival kits, communities. It is characteristic for bombarding the population with information (almost always exaggerated or even falsified), in order to invoke a favourable reaction from the people.

Propaganda within 1984 is prevalent in Orwell's time, through the British ministry of information and 1984s ministry of truth. as well in society today through social media, the government and news.

  • What transpires next in the novel is at the heart of what makes men able to exist with some degree of hope for the future. Winston's world is a very hopeless, unfriendly place.
  • Orwell provides compelling reasons for the people of the 21st century to, much as we did in the 60's, question authority.
  • You'll find yourself asking how this man who wrote the novel in 1948 could possibly have such foresight into what would evolve into the world as we know it today. Similarities between life as we know it and life as Orwell foresaw abound.
