"I talk and share what I do with a lots of teachers. When these educators hear about the ways their colleagues are using blogs and Twitter in their classrooms they are intrigued. Most of them are interested enough to want to look further, but the idea is a bit overwhelming. I find this to be especially true of primary teachers. "What would that look like with young children?" they wonder. "What do the different blogging tools look like if you teach six year olds?" "How could you use Twitter in a kindergarten classroom?" "Yes, I can see what that would look like with older students, but my students are young. Most of them can't yet write. What would THAT look li"

Sadly, moments of full immersion are not the memories that most of us have from our years as students. It is clear that schools -- and learning -- are more powerful and effective when students are deeply connected to their work. What would it take for students to regularly experience the kind of engagement where they are fully immersed and "lost" in their tasks? Learning that leads to deep engagement should be thoughtfully and carefully structured to work for many different types of learners. One of the wonderful challenges of our craft is to structure learning so that it draws in young people with many different interests, abilities and skill levels.

Before we begin, let's lay some groundwork. Vocabulary (or word study) isn't done in a vacuum. You don't pass out lists and have students memorize words and definitions (you don't do that, do you?). If you used to, that's changed with Common Core. Now, you are expected to integrate vocab into learning. Every time students run into a term they don't get, you need to pause and help them decode it. It may be obvious from context, its parts (roots and affixes), but always-always-pay attention so students know unfamiliar words are not skipped. With Common Core, every nuance is important. It's about uncovering knowledge.

"Getting students to "mastery" implies that they have mastered a concept, have learned everything there is to know about it, and are ready to move on. "Project-based learning is not 'doing projects'. PBL is student-driven and specifically open to interpretation to ensure students learn through carrying out a project and not doing a project pre-designed by the teacher. They are driven to answer a 'big' question and carry out their inquiry and design in teams. They are also under pressure to present their results to a third party of some kind. The students decide on how to achieve the goals and are not carrying out teacher-designed tasks."

Things can appear to be going smoothly -- students have been engaged by the project, they've been learning content and skills, they've been busy and meeting deadlines -- but their thinking is not as in-depth and their final products not as polished as they should be. "Teachers are always afraid that their students will know more than them about the technology. In my opinion, students are more aptly called digital tourists than digital natives. With this handy app installed on their bookmarks bar, students will be able to properly attribute Flickr creative commons photos with a single cut and paste. Another good thing about Flickr CC Attribution Helper is that it shows users whether a picture is licensed under a Creative Commons or not."

"When Apple announced Airdrop this past June, I knew it would be a great feature for teachers with iPads. A common complaint about iPads in the classroom was that it wasn't necessarily easy to transfer student work in the Camera Roll to the teacher. With no USB connection and no SD card slot, how was a teacher supposed to collect student work? Email would work for small files, but videos were much too large to send. Dropbox could be a solution, but that would require students to set up their own accounts, problematic if they are under a certain age. Enter AirDrop, a seamless and very quick way to transfer files via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections between "nearby" devices. "
