"The Managing Complex Change model puts language to that which makes some schools successful while others struggle. The model looks at five components necessary to create a desired environment. These include vision, skills, incentives, resources, action plan. If any one piece is missing the model indicates results schools will experience including change, confusion, anxiety, gradual change, frustration, and a false start. When thinking of successful schools such as Science Leadership Academy, The MET, The Island School, The iSchool, you will find they have all those components in place. On the other hand, when I hear teachers lamenting about their school failures, the model brings clarity to the fact that one or more of these components are missing. Below is the chart that lays this out. Following the chart, I'll take a look at what each missing component might look like in a school environment. As you read, consider which, if any are components, are missing at your school. save image Lack of Vision = Confusion When I hear exasperated teachers spinning their wheels, working so hard to get ready for all the various mandates and requirements, but never feeling a sense of accomplishment, it is clear there is not a tangible school vision that has been communicated. In some cases this is because what is being imposed does or can not reconcile with what the school wanted for their vision. Skill Deficit = Anxiety My heart goes out to those with a skill deficit. They are required to implement a curriculum they are not trained in using or being evaluated via measures with which they are not familiar. Or…they are put into a position they were not trained for or prepared to embrace. Social media provides a great medium for helping these teachers get up to speed, but when the outreach occurs, the anxiety is abundantly clear. "As 3D printers increasingly find roles in schools, libraries and even homes, it is vital that educators provide challenging and meaningful projects. School administrators, trustees, superintendents and parents will not be impressed by an iPhone case downloaded from the internet to roll off the expensive new 3D printer. Instead, educators should encourage students to use these printers to create original designs that are more than just tchotchkes. Projects that allow students to create something "bigger" than the design itself are the most appealing. The 3D printer then becomes a tool that enables students to craft works they would otherwise be incapable of producing."

"I LOVE the app Skitch (free for Mac, iPhone, and iPad) for many reasons! I can easily use it to annotate any picture or screenshot.  I often use it when creating handouts for teacher training sessions. Knowing how simple the app is to use, I got to thinking it would be great for the kids use to annotate pictures they take in the classroom. This lead me to ask a kindergarten teacher in my building if I could come and co-teach an iPad lesson with her using Skitch (thanks, Kari!).  "

"The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum announces the release of the Guggenheim iPad app, which offers a unique exploratory experience from anywhere in the world. The free app is available to download at guggenheim.org/app. An extension of the existing Guggenheim app for iPhones and Android handsets, the new iPad app brings together a rich array of content highlighting the museum's collections and exhibitions as well as its publications archive, offering access to more than 100 out-of-print titles dating back to the 1930s. "

"The iPad isn't famed for its photographic abilities. But in reality, it is one of the most useful devices a photographer could own. Everyone who takes pictures has a favored digital workflow. For some, it is entirely iPhone-based, using filters and careful framing in preparation for the latest Instagram triumph. For others, it is a laptop operation which takes hours of patient sorting, followed by adjustment and layering. But there is a third way. The iPad's processing power cannot compete with that of a computer, and its photographic credentials are less celebrated than those of a smartphone, and yet, you could argue that it combines the best of mobile and desktop."

All content from Rice University's open education initiative Connexions is now available for download as e-books. Connexions rolled out the availability of more than 1,000 titles this week in the popular EPUB file format. EPUB is the standard used by most smart phones and e-readers worldwide. The files can be accessed with enTourage's eDGe, Apple's iPad and iPhone and with Google's Android, among others.
