Welcome to our website! We are a fifth grade class in Greenville, Pennsylvania. After taking a vote, our class named itself "Mrs. Abernethy's Global Gorillas." Many of the pages listed here are dedicated to topics we are learning about in school.

AACE Global U is pleased to announce and organize "Social Media: Trends and Implications for Learning," a monthly online seminar series. The seminar series, led by George Siemens and David Cormier, is without fee and will include live interactive sessions, in addition to discussions with guest speakers and participants. All sessions are co-sponsored by and will be archived in the Education & Information Technology Library (EdITLib).

Please join us in making February 4, 2015, the first annual Global School Play Day for students in schools around the world, grades Pre-K to 6 or ages 1-12. In his TEDx lecture, Peter Gray clearly argues the case that today's kids do not grow up playing and this has negatively impacted them in many ways. It's time we return the gift of play to this generation.

"We've talked before about some of the newer skills necessary for students and teachers in the 21st century. Digital literacy - and all the elements contained within that term-  is probably the buzzword you hear most often. And for good reason: today's young students are living in a largely digital, quickly evolving world that their teachers did not have. And their world will likely become even more digital as time goes on."

7 over-arching tensions, these being: 1. The tension between the global and the local. 2. The tension between the universal and the individual. 3. The tension between tradition and modernity. 4. The tension between long term and short term considerations. 5. The tension between competition and concern for equality of opportunity. 6. The tension between expansion of knowledge and our capacity to assimilate it. 7. The tension between the spiritual and the material.

"So here's the thing, we've all seen the presentations on the value of authentic learning and there is no doubt that creating meaningful learning experiences is paramount. And, incorporated wisely, with intention and forethought, giving students the opportunity to create digitally is a powerful tool. But creating on the devices is only half of the picture - less than half even. Last year, I visited a school and saw a group of Kindergarten students thrilled to show off their understanding using Doodle Buddy. I observed a student create a masterpiece. He looked at me eagerly, "Now what?" We held up the iPad and his peers applauded. Sharing it beyond the class however was not in the cards that day. I was struck by the lightening fast speed with which he lost interest in the whole activity as soon as he realized the sharing stopped at the classroom door."
