L'ipotesi storicamente più fondata fa risalire la genesi di Casarano al centurione romanoCaesar. Il nome di Casarano, infatti, deriverebbe da Caesaranum. L'origine romana di Casarano è avvalorata dal ritrovamento, nei pressi dell'attuale Chiesa di Casaranello, di due epigrafi databili tra i secc. I a.C. e I d.C. Inoltre la Via Appia Traiana (98-113 a.C.) lambiva proprio la zona di Casaranello, teatro di tutte le scoperte più antiche della città.
