Armenians have lived in the Karabakh region since Roman times. In the early Middle Ages the native Albanian population of upper Karabakh merged into the Armenian population, and after 1300 Islamic Turks moved into the steppes of lower Karabakh.

Provinces of Armenia: Ararat Marz Ararat Marz is located in the western part of Armenia's borders with Turkey and the Nagorno-Karabakh. The area of Ararat region clearly demarcated into two parts - valleys and mountains. The flat portion is located between the river Hrazdan and the Armenian border with Turkey. the majority of the population of the Marz, which, basically, are Armenian immigrants from Persia who arrived here in 1830, is concentrated here.
