Founded in 1984, the Center for Computer Assisted Research in the Humanities is engaged in the development of large databases of musical and textual materials for applications in research, teaching, and performance.

The multidisciplinary work at SARC evolves and expands as collaborations develop and with variations in our research community. Current work is based on the following areas:

The purposes of the Society are to foster the exchange of ideas between and among members whose activities, though diverse, stem from a common interest in music information retrieval; to stimulate research, development, and improvement in teaching in all branches of music information retrieval; to encourage publication and distribution of theoretical, empirical, and applied studies; to cooperate with representatives of other organizations and disciplines toward the furtherance of music information retrieval; and to support and encourage diversity in membership and the disciplines involved as a fundamental aspect of the society.

Music21 is a set of tools for helping scholars and other active listeners answer questions about music quickly and simply.
