Using Color to Evoke Reactions and Emotions - 0 views

  • Studies show that certain colors will generate different reactions from audience members.  For example, black promotes authority and strength, while blue conveys reliability and trustworthiness (which is why so many companies use it in their corporate logos).  Red excites people, prompting them to be more innovative and take more risks.  Orange demonstrates a combination of confidence and playfulness.  So, you’ll want to select colors carefully, based on the emotions you are seeking to evoke, or the perceptions you are trying to create.
  • While colors like red or purple can be rather effective in certain scenarios, when used too liberally, the presenter – and his or her delivery – can be viewed as overly aggressive.  The opposite is true for colors like white, gray, or pastels, which create a perception of passivity or weakness.  These colors should be used as highlight or accent colors only – as opposed to key colors within the presentation’s design.

  • It starts with the simplest possible tools…pen and paper.
  • The idea is simple… Buy a sturdy college-ruled notebook dedicated to the relevant class. (I use the 100 page, 1 subject, college-ruled Stasher by Roaring Spring, but many people also swear by the Black n’ Red.) Buy a good pen. (Nothing beats a black uniball micro 0.5mm.) Take your notebook and pen and go to the most relaxing, meditative, non-distracting place possible. The deep stacks of the library is okay. Hiking 30 minutes into the woods or onto the dunes overlooking a windswept springtime beach is even better. Spend 1 – 3 hours working out your thinking on the task at hand in the notebook. Spend the last 20 minutes carefully summarizing your results on a clean page that you mark with the date and a title.

The result is that online references are forced into an existing scheme, which has an inherent preference for physical resources. The traditional reference is often provided in papers, when it is the online one that has actually been used because the referencing system is biased towards the paper version.

My self-regulation professor, Dr. Heidi Andrade suggested going through the rubric with student in class and having them use different colored pencils to underline sections in the paper that meet or do not meet specific rubric requirements.

  • The vast majority of the world's books, music, films, television and art, you will never see. It's just numbers. Consider books alone. Let's say you read two a week, and sometimes you take on a long one that takes you a whole week. That's quite a brisk pace for the average person. That lets you finish, let's say, 100 books a year. If we assume you start now, and you're 15, and you are willing to continue at this pace until you're 80. That's 6,500 books, which really sounds like a lot. Let's do you another favor: Let's further assume you limit yourself to books from the last, say, 250 years. Nothing before 1761. This cuts out giant, enormous swaths of literature, of course, but we'll assume you're willing to write off thousands of years of writing in an effort to be reasonably well-read. Of course, by the time you're 80, there will be 65 more years of new books, so by then, you're dealing with 315 years of books, which allows you to read about 20 books from each year. You'll have to break down your 20 books each year between fiction and nonfiction – you have to cover history, philosophy, essays, diaries, science, religion, science fiction, westerns, political theory ... I hope you weren't planning to go out very much. You can hit the highlights, and you can specialize enough to become knowledgeable in some things, but most of what's out there, you'll have to ignore. (Don't forget books not written in English! Don't forget to learn all the other languages!)

This is designed for kids but it is fun to use and the animations are actually overlaying real works of art. Exactly the deconstruction of what we will be doing in class all semester. I think it helps make the connection better than a simple text explanation from me.
