  • Everything we do in our lives requires a balance between two things or more - a compromise. This column talks about the balance between theory and practice, so it is appropriate to consider that balance with respect to training and teaching. In my January 2004 column, I explained how I am seeking the right blend of theory and practice in my software development courses. My primary job is to prepare students for the rest of their working lives and help them succeed in their careers. So I first have to ensure that they learn fundamental principles and then teach them to use specific tools and techniques as time allows.

In the kitchen, the whirring and pulsing sounds of the food blender were jazzy and invigorating. When turning on the TV, the first few notes that I heard became the beginning of a song. Fire engines and ambulance provided ALARMING possibilities. At last I was composing!!

      This paragraph fits very nicely into a Unit I always did in the F2F environment in 6th grade called Found Sounds. This might tie nicely to a F2F experience the students could have with composing in the classroom as a precursor to composing in their Software program.

      I love this site! It presents reading material at three levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced Spanish readers. After you make your selection, you are brought to a page offering pre-reading activities, the story in text form, and post-reading activities. Students can't help but learn from this site. A balanced blend of grammar, vocabulary, culture and history makes this site interesting and engaging. A pop-up dictionary enables students to understand new vocabulary in context. Awesome!

Elluminate (http://www.elluminate.com) is a web based tool that provides opportunities for distance learners to stay in their location and participate in synchronous, real time lectures, seminars, or presentations with other members in a different location.

      Yes, very good point - and as I'm learning week after week, there are many technologies out there to help with meeting the objectives. What I've realized in the past 2 weeks or so is that I didn't have very clear objectives. Once I clarified those, I found it easier to begin to build my course and visualize the modules.

      I agree that perhaps these populations aren't benefiting from the technology yet, but the potential is huge. Imagine being able to reach out to poorer communities via online learning. Urban schools have a really difficult time recruiting and retaining quality teachers. It's not unheard of for an uncertified teacher to teach in an urban school, because they are so desperate for teachers to man the classrooms. If some of the learning can happen online, or if they could offer blended classes, it could have real potential to raise graduation rates. Online learning is still fairly new in the grand scheme, but it is spreading like wildfire. More people will come on board, great minds will (have) come together for Best Practices, and the proof will be in the student outcomes.
