QUESTION: When we talk about manufacturing of consent, whose consent is being manufactured? CHOMSKY: To start with, there are two different groups, we can get into more detail, but at the first level of approximation, there's two targets for propaganda. One is what's sometimes called the political class. There's maybe twenty percent of the population which is relatively educated, more or less articulate, plays some kind of role in decision-making. They're supposed to sort of participate in social life -- either as managers, or cultural managers like teachers and writers and so on. They're supposed to vote, they're supposed to play some role in the way economic and political and cultural life goes on. Now their consent is crucial. So that's one group that has to be deeply indoctrinated. Then there's maybe eighty percent of the population whose main function is to follow orders and not think, and not to pay attention to anything -- and they're the ones who usually pay the costs.

Interestingly, the blogosphere, including microblogging like Twitter, has undermined this manufacture of consent in some ways but also trivialized areas of major concern because of the emphasis on popularity and "like" type responses in social media. But social media has definitely changed the landscape and big data has changed the relationships with the entities in a position to influence and control information and frame issues within the public eye.

jim: breathe.... i am so sorry. i know how very frustrating this can be.... just a week ago i lost one of my blog posts ... i was crushed and frantic after spending a whole day writing the post... if you follow me on twitter you may have seen my frantic panic expressed in my appeals for help to the the twitterverse for assistance/suggestions on how to recover the post ... i just spent so much time on it....and i have no idea how i deleted it. I am not sure if this will help, but unbelievable after doing all kinds of things to try to recover my post, i actually found it by hitting the back button on my browser. I am on a mac and using firefox, so i don't know if it would work in other browsers or on a PC. there may also be other factors. I never shut down my computer and i use millions of tabs. I think my copy was still in the cache of the computer on the tab that i had used to create the post... anyway. i hope you are ok now. and i look forward to this post. me

Front-Row Tweets I get a good start on reflecting on my conference learning from the tweets I've posted to Twitter during the conference. This is how I take notes: I'm constantly processing the information as I hear it, tweeting the ideas I find valuable, which at the same time adds them to an archive of my tweets that I can review and reflect on later. Tweeting at conferences has also helped me build an incredible professional learning network, which is the greatest source of my own professional development year-round. My conference tweets are a chance to give back to the incredible educators in my PLN who share great ideas and resources with me daily. I know it's not for everyone, but I highly recommend it!
