  • Diigo vient de sortir en version publique, après plusieurs mois de bêta privée. Ce nouveau service est avant tout un outil de “social bookmarking” (tu bookmarkes et je surveille ce que tu fais). On y retrouve donc les fonctionnalités classique de ce type d’outil, avec quelques plus appréciables tels que la recherche fulltext ou la possibilité de republier les bookmarks stockés sur diigo sur d’autres services tels que Delicious ou Blinklist. Mais ce qui fait la force de ce service c’est le système d’annotations : tu peux surligner et annoter différentes parties de la page, tout ceci étant ensuite stocké avec ton bookmark. C’est très pratique pour ce souvenir par exemple de ce qui t’avais intéressé dans une page donnée. De plus, grâce à la magie de l’Ajax, tu peux aussi voir toutes les annotations faites par la communauté lorsque tu arrives sur un site… Si ce que je te raconte n’est pas clair, il te suffit d’essayer par toi même pour comprendre la force du système.

  • Monday, July 24th, 2006 Diigo: Social Annotation Category: Showcase Diigo is about “Social Annotation”, which, in our view, is a superset of Social Bookmarking, and much more. On the annotation side, Diigo allows highlights and sticky notes anywhere on any web page - a bit likewizlite or mystickies. On the social bookmarking side, Diigo is a cross between delicious, Google Notebook and Clipmarks. There is a heavy use of Ajax both on the website and in the annotation tools. Users can highlight and sticky-note web pages without installing any plugin, by using a sort of “super-bookmarklet”, which is called a Diigolet. Here we have an ajaxian post annotated for us to play with:

  • I clicked on it and found a step-by-step guide by Andre ‘Serling’ Segers at ign.com. After reading the Basics, I clicked on Walkthrough, which contains detailed instructions with screen shots for each step of the game. I went to my Diigo toolbar and clicked "bookmark." I entered the following tags: zelda, wii, guide, and video-games. I then printed out the guide to Part 1 and went back to my living room to play. After I completed Part 1 I went back to my computer where I saw that the Diigo widget in my Netvibes ecosystem had a link to the Zelda guide. I clicked on the link, found Part 2, printed it, and continued playing. Here is the complete process, repeated.

  • I teach a portion of a team-taught course called Introduction to Writing Arts that is now required for all Writing Arts majors. In groups of 20 students rotate through three four-week modules, each of which is taught by a different faculty member. My module is called Technologies and the Future of Writing. Students are asked to consider the relationships among technology, writing, and the construction of electronic spaces through readings in four main topic areas: origins of internet technologies, writing spaces, ownership and identities, and the future of writing.

The ideas in the blog become the basis for a larger discussion in a formal paper, which they store in their server space (which we were using as a kind of portfolio). In the paper they cite the blog where they first learned of the ideas. The bookmarked page dynamically appears in the social bookmark widget in their RSS reader so they can find it again. The cycle continues, feeding ideas, building information, compounding knowledge in praxis.

    • Have no fear . . . Diigo is here! What is this Diigo thing you ask? Diigo may be one of the coolest social bookmarking sites on the web. This new web 2.0 tool (well ok, it is not that new but it is very very cool. Anyway, if you have not heard about it, it is still new) is del.icio.us on steroids! Imagine being able to highlight information directly over a web page and attach your comments to what you highlighted. Now you can leave detailed instructions on a website or create a reading coach for students that need additional support. With Diigo you can caption (add a “sticky note” to) an image or concept to enhance understanding.
