That’s all well and good. I guess when you create a new social tool you should expect that–unless, of course, you create a good one. And that, my friends, is what Diigo is. So in answer to the who cares question, I offer the following: Who cares? Bloggers. Trust me. I am one. On several blogs. A large part of blogging is just countering other bloggers. It’s sorta like what I am doing now. Who am I kidding? It is what I am doing now. The advantage to bloggers is twofold. First, Diigo allows you to store your notes right on the page of the blog with which you disagree. Second, Diigo has blog functionality that lets you blog right from Diigo. Which is what I am doing now. Tagging and blogging can occur seamlessly. And it allows you to have multiple blogs. Try doing that with the Performancing plugin (which I love.) Who cares? Researchers. They have wanted a tool like this for years. I don’t know how many times I have wanted to put marginalia on a blog like I do my books. Now I can. Others can as well. I am a librarian in an academic institution. Trust me. Researchers will use this. Who cares? Anyone who uses the web. This is the type of tool that has a wide appeal, especially for those who do not already use a social bookmarking service. This one IS better than others. This one DOES offer something others don’t. This one DOESN’T just clip text. This one puts your notes right where you want them. Hey, I realize there is some truth to the Web 2.x hype. Who wants another social site that has a name that sounds like a Star Wars character. Put if you’re going to fault Diigo for anything, fault it for having a stupid name. Don’t fault it for competing in crowded space. It fills a need for many people, just like all the mom and pop Linux distros out there do. It is marketable, as is evidenced by the fact that over 10,000 people signed up for the Diigo Beta test.

You should know about Diigo! Filed under: Uncategorized, Technology, folksonomy, diigo — NeoArch @ 9:09 am To those of you who read this blog on a regular basis, I want to apologize for posting infrequently lately. I have had a couple other projects that I have been working on, plus my Church had vacation Bible school last week. You don’t get much done during VBS week. I just wanted to take the time to inform you about a new social bookmarking service. For those of you who already have one, you’re probably groaning, “Not another one!” I know. I know. I have been using Del.icio.us for…well…forever. I can’t remember life before Del.icio.us. In fact, I have no intentions on ceasing from using Del.icio.us. (With Diigo and its toolbar, I don’t have to, but more on that in another post.) For those of you who don’t have a social bookmarking service…well…you need one. Social bookmarking is a way to keep track of all of the websites that you visit. It allows you to describe the page using several one word “tags.” For example, if you visited the page for “Talladega Nights,” you might tag it as “movie,” “Will_Ferrell,” “stupid,” and “NASCAR.” This may seem like a useless service until you cannot find that page with the thing that you needed for your job and now you’re gonna get fired cause you can’t produce what you said you could. Or perhaps you can’t find that online add for that ring for your wife that you saw that would save you $1000 so now you can’t get a new johnboat because you don’t have the extra $$$$ you would have saved. Trust me. You need one. There are several out there. Diigo is different, though. The service is only in beta testing at this point, so you have to actually request an invitation to participate. Diigo not only lets you save a bookmark to the page, but it also allows you to highlight content. It lets you add virtual sticky notes to the page. This really is the ideal tool for research and blogs. You can access your thoughts about a certain web page from anywhere in the world, right on the web page. How many times have you wished that blogs and webpages worked like books. You wish that you could add marginalia. You wish that the marginalia could be either public or private. It’s all possible with Diigo.

Don’t just take my word for it. Go try out Diigo’s playground for yourself. If you don’t think the service is the coolest thing since Cocoa Pebbles (it’s like cereal, only chocolaty), then walk away from your keyboard, go get in your 1973 Ford Maverick, throw in your favorite Captain and Tenille 8-track, and …well… you get the picture. I have just started using Diigo in the past few days, so I will have more to say about it later. However, I do think that this is one of the best social bookmarking sites that I have used. Long live Diigo!

Diigo, a manager of bookmarks and annotations collaboratif I launch out, finally, in the use of Diigo (http://www.diigo.com). I for some time know this product thanks to excellent tutoriels of presentation which very quickly makes it possible to see how much this tool is interesting: http://www.diigo.com/help/flash_tutorial It is free. To exploit it fully, it is preferable to download the bar of the tasks. But, it is possible to be exempted some. On the other hand, the use of the bookmarklet appears essential to me to an about normal operation. Here a first overflight of the tool. I will make a more detailed report when I sufficiently study it with the daily newspaper. Strong points: the page of posting clear and is structured… One does not feel not lost with the first access as with Simpy or Del.icio.us. ; Public or Private Bookmarking (like Simpy) [and conversion public-private is simplissime]; Possibility of importing its bookmarks since Del.icio.us or to import them/export towards its navigator; But, even more extremely, possibility simultaneously of recording a page in Diigo and Del.icio.us or 8 other managers in lines or to send it to somebody by email; It is possible to underline text, to annotate it with a `post-it' (there still public or private option are available); But also to post comments which would be already associated the page by a third… that opens true prospects for collaboratif work! Integration with the blog with the possibility of writing a comment since Diigo which is posted (provided that one succeeded in identifying his API endpoint… what is not yet my case.). The supported blogs are Blogger, Wordpress. Important: not to forget to record the bookmarklet “diigolet” and to use it to activate the functions of underlining and annotations (ajax). Research relates on the tags or the full-text, autement known as, all the fields including the extracts and the annotations but also the bookmarquée page! ! Searching bookmarks in full-text will search the, tags, comments, and the full text of each bookmarked page. Thus, when searching for several search words in full-text, the search results are those bookmarks which contain all the search words in its, tags, comments, but the full text.

In preparation for our talk at SXSW and eBook, we’ve been compiling info on our blogging practices and favorite web apps. I have to say, one of the most useful and robust tools we use right now is Diigo. We use Diigo for TrackSuit CEO and for our corporate clients, we also use it for our personal bookmarking. I think our entire team has switched from Del.icio.us to Diigo, and not in a show of solidarity, but out of sheer convenience.

Diigo - experience feedback After 10 days of use to the daily newspaper, I am convinced of the interest of Diigo and I decided to adopt it. I continue by prudence to feed my Delicious account obeying the currency of our wise grandmothers: not to put all our eggs in the same pannier. Some additional assets of Diigo: It is possible to post with the choice: only its own annotations, all annotations thus including those of the thirds or any annotation. By recording new a bookmark, one can characterize it “with reading” it appears then in fat in the list; it is more easily locatable for a second reading. I use this function when I envisage to study the bookmarkée page again or when I wish to take again the tags after examination of the Web page. One can also post the list of all the bookmarks to reading. There are 2 even 3 types of possible annotations with Diigo: 1) you associate a comment the page - 2) you stick a post-it with comment directly in the page - 3) you underline an extract of the page. If you make a research and that you want réccupérer in an aggregate way your underlined comments, annotations and passages - nothing simpler: notch the bookmarks and click then on “extract highlights” in “more actions” (see the explanation) - Essential!! One can be registered with the list of a person even more specifically to the one of his tags.

Direct line of page commentary (Annotation/Comment). [private]/[public] set for the current self-belief that the near future will be introduced [groups] set. ( I personally look forward to the most functional! ^^ ) 2. Synchronous additional services to major existing line bookmarks ( Del.icio.us , Furl , Spurl , :). 3. Blog-This . Diigo available to users prepared blog editing interface, he will be responsible for the articles sent to the major Blog service stations (Blogger, WordPress, MySpace, :) 4. This feaure allows you to create a slide show from your bookmarks so they become more interesting and you can highlight what you want. This lets you convey a series of points quickly and gives rise to an overall effect. Kind of like the difference between a picture and a group of pictures that run together to make a short movie. Each frame is meaningful, but in the aggregate they gain much, much more meaning and impact. Okay, enough about that. Just try it and see if you agree.

By the way, if you’re not familiar with diigo, it’s a collaborative bookmarking tool available for free on the web. It fits in and becomes part of your browser so you can capture information of any kind (words, audio, video, URLs, etc.) while browsing, doing research, etc. So far I’ve just described bookmarking, which we’ve all been doing that since Internet Explorer and Netscape were duking it out in 1995. So what’s the difference? The twist is diigo (like many competing services such as del.icio.us, furl, spurl, Yahoo!, Windows Live, and others) makes your bookmarks available to all other users of the service, while doing the same for you. Instant sharing. Of course you can also restrict your bookmarks to a particular group or keep them to yourself. But where’s the fun in that?

I maintain a few groups on diigo myself on topics such as legal technology, real property law, the current mortgage meltdown, divorce, immigration … you get the idea. Diigo goes a step further. Diigo is really more like a mash-up of social bookmarking and social networking. It is as if Facebook and del.icio.us had a child and named it Diigo. Like del.icio.us, Diigo allows you to post your bookmarks online, tag them and share them. However, Diigo allows to to create a network of friends and see what their recent activity is - much easier to see the new items bookmarked by your friends than in del.icio.us. There is also a comment wall which allows for friends to engage in conversation or discussion about sites. Additionally, Diigo allows you to create lists in addition to tags. Tags allow for a dynamic set of resources to be viewed. Lists allow you to create a static set of resources when necessary. It is another option for organizing bookmarked sites. You can also designate sites as favorites. Finally, Diigo allows you to create groups so that people who might have something in common can share bookmarks with the group that they think the other members of the group might find interesting. Diigo is quickly becoming a favorite resource from what I can tell by listening in the twitterverse. Good site to check out.

Interesting “analogy” Like to add: Diigo’s web annotation (the ability to add highlight, sticky notes) to any part of a webpage is another very unique and core competence of Diigo’s offerings. As you read on the web, instead of just bookmarking, you can highlight portions of web pages that are of particular interest to you. You can also attach sticky notes to specific parts of web pages. Unlike most other web “highlighters” that merely clip, Diigo highlights and sticky notes are persistent in the sense that whenever you return to the original web page, you will see your highlights and sticky notes superimposed on the original page, just what you would expect if you highlighted or wrote on a book! Moreover, all the information — highlighted paragraphs, sticky notes, and the original url — are saved on Diigo servers, creating your personal digest of the web, your own collection of highlights from the web - ones that are meaningful to you!

In my professional life, I train recruiters on how to use the internet to find hidden talent as well as conduct extensive online research on behalf of my employer. I tell EVERYONE that Diigo is THE product to use (bar none) and encourage any and all to try it for themselves. I diigo! Do you diigo?

Phil97 April 10th, 2007 at 11:16 pm I’ve spent a lot of time using Diigo. I’ve looked over the other services you mention, just in case there was something better out there. Day in and day out, I can work more quickly and easily. It’s so powerful I still haven’t scratched the surface. They seem to be making it better all the time, and they listen to their users. Diigo rocks the Web!
