    OS X has a number of options for handling disk images-settings for such things as automatically opening them, moving Internet-enabled images to the trash after opening, verifying checksums, and more. You control all of these options (and a few more) in Disk Utility's preferences panel. If you change these settings often, though, you may tire of launching Disk Utility and opening its preferences panel. As an alternative-and with a side bonus of gaining one additional option-you can install a hidden System Preferences panel to make accessing these options a bit easier. There are two ways to install this panel; one requires Terminal, and the other uses just the Finder. If Apple were to update the panel at some point, the Finder method wouldn't reflect those updates, while the Terminal method always insures you're seeing the latest version of the panel.

    When Microsoft laid off 5,000 people in January, analysts and pundits pointed to plenty of reasons for the first major layoffs in the company's history. The obvious culprits included the overall economic meltdown, Apple's continued success and Wall Street's desire to see a leaner Microsoft. But the real cause of the layoffs can be summed up in a single word: netbooks. These lightweight, stripped-down laptops that sell for between $200 and $400 have taken a big chunk out of Microsoft's bottom line. Unless the company comes up with a plan to handle them, its revenue will stagnate.

It adds a special preference pane that allows you to quickly change the default application for many common situations: * Open all your .pdf files in Acrobat instead of Preview. * Pick a different default mail client or web browser. * Control what opens when digital cameras or webcams are plugged in. * Close security holes with how certain weblinks are handled. Of course you can change these settings other ways. But RCDefaultApp makes it much easier by putting the most requested controls into one location - a new "Default Apps" option at the bottom of your Mac OS X System Preferences.
