    Amtrak, the government-owned company that manages railroad services in US, has made a firm determination to use the iPhone Development as a rail service tool and to accomplish this mission the conductors are being trained since November to avail the Apple handsets as an electronic ticket scanner as reported by the NEW YORK TIMES. By now more than 1,500 conductors are using the devices on Amtrak trains on a few selected routes. The iOS devices contain an extra battery and a barcode scanner along with an app that aids in scanning & also displays special conditions as for a disabled person to coordinate a wheelchair lift at a particular destination. The app also enables the conductors to report mechanical failures of the train.

      Not true - the word 'system' is misleading.  More accurately: installing Oracle Java 7 (JavaAppletPlugin.plugin) on OS X will prevent use of Apple Java 6 in web browsers and other Internet apps that use the plug-in.

    This looks like great (it is a mix of Bash and AppleScript) and it works very well for me. However if you are not familiar with simple Unix administration, you might prefer packaged freeware or shareware like StartupSound.prefPane or Psst.

      Q: Why doesn't the installer _tell_ you this? It looks and feels like an ordinary unix user with 'sudo' access, but according to Tao, it can be troublesome. A: My guess is that Apple doesn't want you to have to remember two passwords. Perhaps Apple decided, unlike Tao, that the security of asking for passwords for important tasks is good enough.
  • Create your own Applications folder inside your home directory (Mac OS X will change the icon accordingly) and try out new stuff in there.
  • drag the entire Applications folder to the right-hand side of the Dock, forming what Apple calls a “stack”

      In Mac OS X 10.4, you find this in preferences under Accounts, and click the "Parental Controls" tab, then select Finder and click Configure .... I don't think there is a "Limitations" tab.

    Mac OS X 10.5 requires you to enter an administrator's password to pause/resume a print queue, where no previous version of OS X has done so. This is extremely annoying in a lab setting -- if there's a paper jam or something, the queues on all the computers need to be restarted by an administrator, instead of the user just clicking Resume. I haven't seen a solution to this elsewhere, so here's what I came up with:
