In alarming numbers, teenagers who think they are fully prepared to make ethical decisions are also driven by the pursuit of success to cheat, by time constraints to plagiarize, and by vengeance to inflict physical violence. This paints a disturbing picture for employers who will be relying on this age group to fill the pipeline in their future workforces. The fifth annual JA/Deloitte Teen Ethics Survey found that while most teens (71 percent) feel fully prepared to make ethical decisions in the workplace, nearly 40 percent of those young people believe that lying, cheating, plagiarizing, and violence are sometimes necessary to succeed in school. Our Space is a set of curricular materials designed to encourage high school students to reflect on the ethical dimensions of their participation in new media environments. Through role-playing activities and reflective exercises, students are asked to consider the ethical responsibilities of other people, and whether and how they behave ethically themselves online. Computer Ethics is a big focal area at Pioneer Middle School. This link provides a whole unit of information on cyberEthics for kids, complete with four different tasks and a downloadable task sheet. As part of the unit, students created their own Ethics quizzes and they are posted on line .

The Rochester Regional Cybersafety and Ethics Initiative has conducted the largest cyber safety and Ethics survey of K-12 students in the Nation, with more than 40,000 students throughout the area participating. This new study shows that the majority of cyber offenses involving children, adolescents and young adults are perpetrated, not by adults, but rather by peers of approximately the same age or grade level. Howard Gardner, the founder of multiple-intelligences theory discusses the challenges ethics and education face as digital media become more prevalent. Through his GOODPLAY PROJECT, he examines the ethical sense of young people. He ooks at five elements related to what it means to be ethical with new media: sense of identity, sense of privacy, sense of ownership/authorship, trustworthiness and credibility, and what it means to participate in a community.

Carrie James speaks at the Social Good Summit 2010 about the ethical sensibilities of digital youth and describes the need for students to develop important cognitive and analytical skills when using social media. Much of the work was described in the GoodPlay Project.

Merle Marsh wrote this highly informative article on Teaching Children to Be Responsible Users of Technology, which includes real-life incidents involving legal and ethical abuses of technologies. She also provides recommended educator activities and teaching suggestions.
