Lesson Plan for Grades 5&6. With the layering of identity through the use of nicknames and avatars, as well as a sense of anonymity, it is easy for young people to sometimes forget that real people-with real feelings-are at the heart of online conversations. In this lesson, students are provided with opportunities to explore this concept and discuss the importance of using empathy and common sense when talking to others online.

It is just as important to observe safety on the Internet as it is to follow traffic signs. The Think.com community is a place where the teacher sees everything. Everyone is responsible for his/her own actions while in Think.com. Passwords are to be kept secret.

We will be allowing kids from our school to get on Lively, and react in the virtual world. We have created nine superheroes. All About Explorers [Fictional Site] - 2 views

  •
This fictional site was developed by a group of teachers as a means of teaching students about the Internet. Although the Internet can be a tremendous resource for gathering information about a topic, they found that students often did not have the skills to discern useful information from worthless data. The teachers set out to develop a series of lessons for elementary age students in which they would demonstrate that just because it is out there for the searching does not mean it is worthwhile.

The Internet can be a rich and valuable source of information - and an even richer source of misinformation. Sorting out the valuable claims from the worthless ones is tricky, since at first glance a Web site written by an expert can look a lot like one written by your next-door neighbor. This lesson offers students background and practice in determining authority on the Internet - how to tell whether an author has expertise or not, and whether you're getting the straight story.
