With the layering of identity through the use of nicknames and avatars, as well as a sense of anonymity, it is easy for young people to sometimes forget that real people-with real feelings-are at the heart of online conversations. In this lesson, students are provided with opportunities to explore this concept and discuss the importance of using empathy and common sense when talking to others online.

Olivia's Letters is a lesson plan about bullying and cyber bullying that is designed to develop empathy and bystander awareness in children and youth. It was inspired by a cyberbullying incident in Marin County, CA. Two Mill Valley teens empathized with the young girl who had been victimized and took it upon themselves to start an "Olivia's Letters" campaign to boost her spirits. Their actions resulted in over 14,000 letters to Olivia from people across the country and around the world.

This documents students using Google Lively to teach other students about digital citizenship

For our project, we chose to create a virtual room, called Digiteen World, on Google Lively. Our main objective of this project is to get people more aware about Digital Citizenship. We will be allowing kids from our school to get on Lively, and react in the virtual world. We have created nine superheroes. Each superhero has a lesson to teach abut the nine aspects of Digital Citizenship. By teaching the lessons in a virtual room, the kids get to have a great time and still learn very important lessons. The goal of this project is to educate people on how to act online. In allowing kids to be a part of this project, we hope that they will learn how to be good digital citizens.

Think.com's safety lesson with nets standards. Think.com is excellent to use with younger students and is very walled and has an excellent profanity filter. I highly recommend it and have personally used it for a summer blogging project. Excellent site. It also requires an extensive verification process by the participating schools.

This fictional site was developed by a group of teachers as a means of teaching students about the Internet. Although the Internet can be a tremendous resource for gathering information about a topic, they found that students often did not have the skills to discern useful information from worthless data. The teachers set out to develop a series of lessons for elementary age students in which they would demonstrate that just because it is out there for the searching does not mean it is worthwhile.

With the increasing popularity of e-mail and online instant messaging among today's teens, a recognizable change has occurred in the language that students use in their writing. Nice collection of interactive lessons addressing digital citizenship for schools to use to meet federal requirements. 

In this lesson, students draw conclusions from an analysis of propaganda techniques used in a piece of literature-such as the novel Brave New World, the play The Crucible, or the movie Dr. Strangelove-and political advertisements posted on the Internet. Students also make connections to their own world by looking for examples of propaganda in other media, such as print ads and commercials.
