I finally got a chance to download the application today, and after doing so, here are my initial observations after using the new app.

初代iPhoneで、Appleは8時間までの連続通話を保証したが、わたしは確認できたことがない。2台のiPhoneを使っているが、状態がよくてもせいぜい5時間程度だった。Appleが8時間と言っていて実際には5時間だったのだから、iPhone 3Gではどういうことになるだろうかと心配だ。Appleが提示したiPhone 3Gでの3Gネットワーク経由の通話時間はわずか5時間だ。つまり、通話時間はたったの3時間ということになるのだろうか？　製品名に「Phone（電話）」が含まれている端末にとって、これは重要な問題だ。携帯電話にとっての基本的な優先事項は通話であるべきだ。電話はまず電話であり、そのほかの機能は二の次だ。Appleは、通話を長くしたい人は2Gネットワークを使えばバッテリー持続時間は10時間になると主張するかもしれない。はぁ？　ユーザーはバッテリー持続時間の調節のためにネットワークをいちいち切り替えなければならないのだろうか。

日本語入力についてはケータイが断然楽だ。記者はポケベル入力であれば長文メールを書くのは苦にならないが、iPhoneの新しい入力方式はレスポンスが悪すぎてストレスがたまる。方式としては悪くないのかもしれないし、覚えればさくさく入力できそうなのだが、予測変換の候補を探しに行っているのか、どうも妙な「間」があちこちに入ってしまってタッチタイプ的な先行入力ができない。検索窓の予測とぶつかると、ほとんど制御不能になる。入力ミスを修正しようにも、何を処理しているのか分からないほど画面とユーザーのアクションがバラバラになってしまう。今さらケータイのメールがない生活は考えられないので、解約しようと思っていたauの端末と見比べつつ、どうしたものか思案している。これまで使えた動画メールも使えないのは困る。

WebブラウザのSafariが不安定なこと。非常に頻繁（ひんぱん）に落ちるので、とてもWebサーフィンという感じにならない。確かに、PCと同等のWebページが表示されるし、タブブラウズに近いこともできる。狭い画面用に考え抜かれたズーミングUIは、どういうアルゴリズムか良く分からないが、こちらの意図を見透かしたように必要なところだけをズームイン・ズームアウトをしてくれて快適だ。しかし、いかんせん数ページ開くたびに落ちるほど不安定で、これでは「開いたら何も見えなかった」ということがあるケータイのブラウザ環境とあまり変わらない。

アプリケーションも同様に不安定なものがあって少し驚く。Twitter用クライアントの「twitterific」は、何かの拍子にフリーズして、以後2度とまともに動かなくなった。結局、削除と再インストールが必要だった。New York Timesの購読専用アプリケーションも、永遠に待たされるばかりでコンテンツが落ちてこない。こうしたことは日本のケータイでは考えられないことだ。ただ、これは考えようによってはPCに近くていいのかもしれないとも思う。
