  • 各店舗でどのぐらいの数を処理できるのか、事前にシミュレーションしながら、ソフトバンクは把握していたのではないだろうか。当然、店の前に並んでいたとしても、後ろの方の人は夜中にならないと契約できないということも、予想できていただろう。 　ならば事前にインターネットで予約を取った上で、おおよその来店時間と販売できる店の分配を発売最初の週末だけはソフトバンク側で管理するといったこともできたのではというのは、事後だから言える戯言だろうか? 　わざわざ他店の契約開始時間を12時以降に設定し、予約を一切受け付けずに表参道に人を並ばせることで話題作りをしようとしたのだろうが、とても賛成できるやり方ではない。発売時間が来たら次々に会計処理を行なって手渡しできる商品じゃないのだから、意図的に並ばせるようなやり方で携帯電話を販売するのはやめて欲しい。
  • そうした体験レベルの高さと同時に、購入したユーザーは驚くほど不親切な体験も同時にするはずだ。加えて言うと、日本語版に関しては「素早い反応」という部分にも、大きな疑問符が付く。 　たとえばiPhoneをアクティベートするとソフトバンクモバイルから3通のSMSが届く。筆者が受け取った際には、すでに受信された状態だった。このメッセージの中には、iPhone向け専用のソフトバンクモバイルが提供するメールアドレスの設定と、My Softbankへとログインするパスワードが書かれている。従って、最初にやる作業がこれらの設定なのだが、とてもユーザーフレンドリーとは言えない。
  • iPhone向けのSMSはメッセージをすべてサーバー側で持っているようで(しかも端末内にも保存されないようだ)、SMSアプリケーションを起動すると必ず6～7秒ほど待たされる。その上、メッセージを表示する際にも、長い場合は5秒ほど時間がかかった。何度やっても同様なので、端末にはキャッシュを持っていないのだろう。 　さらに、ランダムに生成された無意味な3つの文字列を何かに書き留めておかなければ、My Softbankの利用やメール設定は行なえない。iPhoneがコピー&ペーストが行なえないというのはよく言われることだが、基本的に2つのアプリケーションを同時起動して両画面を切り替えながら作業するといったことができない。iPhoneアプリケーションはホーム画面に戻ると自動的に終了してしまう。 　このため、SMSとWebブラウザのSafariを行き来しながら、上記設定を行なうことができないのだ。

  • 次に悩むのは、どのメールシステムを用いるかだ。iPhoneはIMAP4を用いたインターネットメールを利用する仕組みになっているが、IMAP4にはメールを端末に送り込むプッシュの機能がない。 　IMAP4で見かけ上、プッシュメールのように見せかけるには、頻繁にメールチェックを行なう必要がある。しかし、頻繁なメールチェックはバッテリ消費を増やしてしまうので、携帯電話では現実的ではない。そこでメールを通知するための仕組みがiPhone向けに開発されている。 　この仕組みはメールが到着したことを示すだけで、具体的にはiPhoneのホーム画面上で未読メールの数字がカウントアップされるだけ。どこから届いたどんなタイトルのメールなのかは端末には伝わらない。

Mailにも、微妙な振る舞いの違いがあり、前者は大容量だが有償のサービス、後者は無料となっている。
  • PCで使っている「sample@impress.co.jp」宛のメールを、すべてiPhone用メールアドレスに転送したとしよう。そこに届いたメールに何か返信を行なう際は、相手がさらに返信をしたときにちゃんと「sample@impress.co.jp」に届いほしい。当然だ。しかしMobileMeから送ったメールに先方が普通に返信すると、その宛先はMobileMeのアドレスとなり、「sample@impress.co.jp」には届かない。 　結局、筆者は普段から使っているアドレスへのメールを、すべてi.softbankメールに転送し、PC用に使っているIMAPメールサーバーにiPhoneからも直接つなぐことにした。これならSMSでメール着信通知が届くし、容量も気にせず、速度的な問題もなかった。 　IMAP4対応のメールサーバーを使っていない人は、Gmailのアカウントとi.softbankメールに同時に転送しておくといい。 　結論としては、各サービスの特徴をきちんと把握していればそれほど複雑なものではないが、こんなことをいちいち考えなくとも、バシッと1つのサービスを選べるようになって欲しいものだ。
  • それでも筆者はiPhoneを使い続けるだろう。なぜなら、iPhoneは普段使っているパーソナルコンピュータの世界と、もっとも高い親和性を持っていると思うからだ。携帯電話だけで、すべての使い方が完結する、あるいはそうしたいという人は、自己完結型の従来型端末を使う方がいいと思う。 　しかし仕事場でも自宅でも、あるいはたまには外出先にもPCを持ち出し、PCの世界に自分が必要な情報を封じ込めてある、といった人にはiPhoneが使いやすい。本来なら、Windows Mobileが同じような役割を果たさなければならないが、Windows Mobileはあまりにパソコン世界に近すぎて、使い方やユーザーインターフェイスの洗練度が低い。Windowsという名前がありながら、フル機能のWindows Vistaとは技術的にも似ていながらも、乖離した部分も多い。 　この先、もしかするとMicrosoftがPC向けWindows、Windows Mobile、Windows Liveなどを統合し、新しい使い勝手の良い提案をしてくれるかもしれないが、当面、PCユーザーにとってもっとも使いやすい情報端末はiPhoneであり続けるのではないだろうか。
