The iPhone Dev Team (not the Cupertino version) plans to release the first ever software-based unlock application for the iPhone 3G on New Year's Eve.

Potentially bad news now if you happen to be an avid tech consumer in the United States holding back on an iPhone purchase while waiting for AT&T's current exclusivity deal and its lock-in policy to come to an end.

Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg took advantage of a recent chat with the Wall Street Journal to talk a bit about Apple. Seidenberg said that Apple never wanted to make a version of the iPhone for Verizon's CDMA network, since it wouldn't be able to be as widely distributed as the GSM-based models it eventually produced.
