What's interesting to note here is that Fessenden isn't replacing Macbooks and desktops but adding Chromebooks.

Schools actively engaged in Chromebook deployment

"From Randy MacLEAN comes this great article about the iPad 2 in Tower School, Marblehead, MA. This fall, third- to eigth-graders in Tower School will harnessing the power of tablet computers as the perfect companions for school projects and assignments."

This iPad rollout struck me as an exemplary case of doing this sort of thing right in the higher education setting. This is a very well thought out project, with robust executive support, and clear directives.

"How will I use new technology to change the fundamental practice of education?"

This is true of any technology initiative regardless of setting, e.g., commercial or academic. What is the goal? What do you want to accomplish with the tech?

The Chromebook is relatively lightweight and easy to set up -- and help desk calls from users have so far been mainly about lost power cords and battery charging issues."

Doubtful students would need desktop access but staff might. Would be good to look into that option as teachers fully migrate from a desktop device to a cloud terminal.

Interesting idea. However, if Apple wants to become ubiquitous at the K-12 level, beyond private and charter schools, they must come up with some kind of site licensing program for equipment and a core suite of starter apps.--something to compete with Google Docs and laptops which are becoming entrenched at K-12.
