"Grace Lutheran is one of many schools that is taking advantage of the new Chromebooks for Education program, announced earlier this summer at Google I/O. For $20 per month per device, schools can rent the netbook-like, Web-only devices. There have been lots of criticisms of the Chromebooks from tech bloggers - they are underpowered computers for the price. But according to Iles, Chromebooks were the logical choice for his school."

What's interesting to note here is that Fessenden isn't replacing Macbooks and desktops but adding Chromebooks.

Official Google Enterprise Blog: Back to school with Chromebooks for Education - 0 views

  •
"As summer vacation ends and students prepare for the year ahead, we want to share stories from the first three schools to hit the ground running with Chromebooks for Education. Chromebooks decrease wait times in the classroom with a super-fast bootup, protect against viruses with enhanced security, and regular updates from Google mean that Chromebooks actually get better over time, saving thousands of dollars on maintenance and software upgrades. We asked these three schools to share their stories about how they plan to use Chromebooks this year to make the collaborative classroom a reality. "

"Computerworld - The city of Orlando, Fla. has deployed 600 Chromebooks to employees and the early verdict is that they're low maintenance devices. The Chromebook is relatively lightweight and easy to set up -- and help desk calls from users have so far been mainly about lost power cords and battery charging issues."
  •
Doubtful students would need desktop access but staff might. Would be good to look into that option as teachers fully migrate from a desktop device to a cloud terminal.

Interesting idea. However, if Apple wants to become ubiquitous at the K-12 level, beyond private and charter schools, they must come up with some kind of site licensing program for equipment and a core suite of starter apps.--something to compete with Google Docs and laptops which are becoming entrenched at K-12.
