Welcome to MegaMath! - 1 views

  •
Mathematics is a live science with new discoveries being made every day. The frontier of mathematics is an exciting place, where mathematicians experiment and play with creative and imaginative ideas. ideas that have already piqued many children's curiosity, but their profound mathematical importance is not widely known or understood. The MegaMath project is intended to bring unusual and important mathematical ideas to elementary school classrooms so that young people and their teachers can think about them together.

Model Eliciting Activities - 1 views

  •
"Model Eliciting Activities (MEAs) are open-ended, engineering-based interdisciplinary problems (e.g., science, mathematics, English language arts) that requires students to create solutions in the form of mathematical and scientific models that reveal their thinking about concepts embedded in the problem. Engineering is the applied context for MEAs as students work in teams to iteratively develop, test, and revise their models to provide a solution for a fictitious client. These engaging problems encourage students to utilize a variety of skills including critically reading texts, applying problem-solving strategies, working mathematically, and communicating effectively with teammates to arrive at a solution, or model. Engineering in K-12 Education: Understanding the Status and Improving the Prospects - 0 views

  •
"Engineering education in K-12 classrooms is a small but growing phenomenon that may have implications for engineering and also for the other STEM subjects--science, technology, and mathematics. Specifically, engineering education may improve student learning and achievement in science and mathematics, increase awareness of engineering and the work of engineers, boost youth interest in pursuing engineering as a career, and increase the technological literacy of all students. The teaching of STEM subjects in U.S. schools must be improved in order to retain U.S. competitiveness in the global economy and to develop a workforce with the knowledge and skills to address technical and technological issues."

History and changes - k-12math.info - 0 views

  •
"K-12math.info is a bibliographic information system used by elementary and secondary school mathematics material developers, teacher trainers, resource professionals and home schooling parents. K-12math.info uses a list of 1,000 of the most common terms that appear in elementary and secondary school student editions of mathematics textbooks. It tracks which textbook contain which terms, on what page (for OER materials a link to where the term can be found), for what grade level, and how the term is being used. Information has been collected since the early 1970's to the present Open Education Resource (OER) textbooks series. And displayed in a spreadsheet format. "

Math as Art - Homeschool Argentina - 0 views

  •
"mathematics. It is every bit as mind blowing as cosmology or physics (mathematicians conceived of black holes long before astronomers actually found any), and allows more freedom of expression than poetry, art, or music (which depend heavily on properties of the physical universe). Mathematics is the purest of the arts, as well as the most misunderstood. http://www.maa.org/devlin/LockhartsLament.pdf Please read this long but enjoyable and very thought provoking essay from Paul Lockhart - it will change your idea of what education should be."
