UK - Winds of change blow across the global market

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Wind power is the most mature of mainstream renewable energy technologies and, if the world's electricity generation is to be made cleaner, it must play a large part.

The International Energy Agency estimates that, if global greenhouse gas emissions are to be halved by 2050, as scientists say is necessary, then wind must represent about 17 per cent of worldwide power generation by that date.

Tags: wind

Posted by: ggarcia

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

At the end of 2007, China's installed base of wind power totaled just over 6 gigawatts (GW), making China the fifth largest producer of wind power, after Germany, the U.S., Spain and India. As a consequence of the rapid build-out of wind power projects in China, in April 2008 the National Development and Reform Commission revised its 11th Five Year Plan Period plan for wind power development from 5 GW to 10 GW by 2010.

Tags: china wind

Posted by: ggarcia

Environmental Capital - WSJ.com : Fish Juice: N.J. Fisherman Angling To Develop Offshore Wind

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

File this one under if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

A group of commercial fishermen wants to get in on the rush to build offshore wind farms to generate electricity. It’s an interesting about face for the fishing industry, which has traditionally fought offshore industrialization – other than their own floating seafood factories, that is.

The effort is attracting attention in New Jersey, where the state is looking to provide grants for a pilot offshore wind farm.

Tags: ocean offshore usa wind wsj.com

Posted by: keulenae

Technology Review: Wind Power That Floats

Comments:

Historically, wind technology has been seen on land and near offshore locations. Restrictions, such as prohibitively expensive offshore foundations to support wind turbines larger than 20 meters, may be viewed as stunting potential market growth. Now, new technology based on floating turbines may enable deeper offshore placement. The view mentioned with this news is that pushing turbines further out to sea will equalise the issue of aesthetics. However, the real issue here is can this technology deliver a useful and economic addition to the grid. posted by bennett

Tags: offshore wind

Posted by: bennett

Comments:

A Norweigan company, SWAY A/S, is developing a deepwater wind turbine system. It seems that this system may offer a technical solution to two issues which are related to wind. These issues are that turbines are an eyesore for some and that of positioning turbines to receive a consistent wind flow. By enabling turbines to be placed far out to sea SWAY theoretically overcomes the eyesore issue. Also, wind flow may be more consistent in the open ocean and therefore a more approporiate environment to harvest consistent wind.

posted by bennett

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

A Norwegian company called Sway is developing a deepwater system that will allow turbines to be situated farther out to sea where winds can be steadier and stronger, and where the turbines are hidden from all save a few passing ships.

Tags: wind

Posted by: bennett
