China – Increased copper imports for September

Chinese imports of copper and copper products in September increased by 20% from August, reaching 213,782 metric tons. Purchases are supposed to satisfy steady domestic needs. ‘’We expect September’s level to be sustained for the remainder of the year as Chinese demand appears to be holding well despite a slowdown in the west,’’ said Cai Jinrong, an analyst at Wanxiang Resources Co. Amid the credit crisis, copper prices have fallen by 27% in London and by 23% in Shanghai during the last two months.

Tags: china copper imports

Posted by: pkotsera

Third quarter 2008 operations review - Rio Tinto

"In the near term, the Chinese economy is pausing for breath. China is not completely insulated from an OECD recession and we will see an impact on Chinese exports. However, the near term slowdown of growth is substantially due to tightening of monetary policy introduced by the Chinese government last year in order to tackle inflation. Furthermore, we expect third quarter economic data to show an exaggerated slowdown, reflecting the postponement of projects during the Olympics. Looking further out, Chinese GDP will remain largely driven by the domestic economy and we expect industrialisation and urbanisation to continue apace with strengthening demand across a range of Rio Tinto products.

Tags: china copper rio trends

Posted by: bennett

It’s clear that you won’t soon hear that an electric car is being powered by eel-inspired technology, but the main advantage of this type of chemical battery in medical purposes usage is that if it breaks, “there are no toxins released into your system.
How Codelco's CEO views the copper market

Jose Pablo Arellano, CEO of Codelco, the world’s biggest copper producer based on Chile, said that in view of falling demand, the market will be in surplus in 2009. He believes it will take 18 months for the market to recover and, consequently, for the copper price to return to its previous rising pattern. Even though Chinese demand is currently weak, it is expected that it will turn bullish again since there are significant prospects in the market. ‘’Construction in China is domestically driven and the government is trying to stimulate that sector and has to fight unemployment. There is less of a concern now in China over inflation; the government is loosening up its policies and spending more, which means projects will continue.’’

Tags: china codelco copper demand

Posted by: pkotsera

Norddeutsche to expand copper scrap recycling by 2011

Norddeutsche Affinerie is to invest €62.5M to increase by 60% its copper scrap recycling capacity in Lünen, Germany by 2011.

The investment will double the firm’s capacity to process complex copper-bearing scrap such as shreddings, powders and electrical scrap to 140,000t/y, bringing total scrap recycling capacity up to 350,000t/y from 220,000t/y currently. The scrap will be processed into copper cathode.

The investment will see the installation of a second smelting furnace, and a waste gas purification plant in Lünen. Norddeutsche’s current secondary smelter in Lünen uses a range of scrap, whilst its Hamburg plant uses copper concentrate and a small percentage of high-grade scrap.

Electronic scrap availability has increased in Europe as end-of-life regulations have been introduced for its disposal.

Comments:

Norddeutsche Affinerie AG (NA) said it is expecting at least EUR40 million of synergies each year from the takeover of Cumerio which was completed in March this year. The company said that it will benefit from the transfer of best practice between the two companies while cost savings mainly come from logistics and process optimization. NA also plans to increase production at its Cumerio smelters. The company expects further acquisition opportunities in Europe and in other parts of the world, including Asia. NA plans to expand its operations in southeastern Europe and the Black Sea region to capitalize on its strong economic growth before looking for growth opportunities outside Europe. In Bulgaria, the company currently expands copper cathode production capacity of its Pirdop smelter to 180,000 tonnes per year. posted by skeung

Tags: copper europe norddeutsche scrap

Posted by: jrtomlins

So how can copper help? Earlier this year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved the registration of 275 copper alloys as antimicrobial materials, allowing public health claims that copper, brass and bronze are capable of killing potentially deadly bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus -- the so-called "superbug" MRSA, which is blamed for many hospital infection deaths.

Tags: antimicrobial copper trends

Posted by: bennett

Japan - scrap trading falls due to slowing economy

Many Japanese scrap dealers have reduced their shipments to copper alloy fabricators by more than 20% in October due to falling demand. Copper fabricators have decreased their scrap purchasing volumes because of weaker semis output. A number of brass bar makers decreased their buying volume of brass turning scrap by more than 30% in October.

From the supply side, copper scrap generation has been tight. Scrap availability has been falling since July and that has triggered competition between scrap dealers to maintain adequate levels of inventory, which resulted in a spike in the market price in September.

Tags: copper japan scrap trends

Posted by: pkotsera
