A chapter in the history of the uranium industry in western Colorado closed today when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified the completion of the 20-year cleanup of the Uravan Mill Superfund Site.

Montrose County ponders proposed uranium mill

Some people think a uranium mill in Montrose County is a good idea, and some are firmly against it, but the process for building one has begun.

An application for a special-use permit from Montrose County was submitted recently by Energy Fuels Resources of Nucla to build the Piñon Ridge Mill in Paradox Valley.

County leaders heard Wednesday night from experts from the Colorado Department of Public Health about the state approval process, which would be the first in decades for a uranium mill.

nergySolutions and Union Pacific Railroad struck an agreement Monday for rail services and upgrades to an existing line that will support moving about 16 million tons of uranium-mill tailings over the next 20 years away from their current location near the Colorado River and Moab.

The Department of Energy announced Tuesday that the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding to ready a rail line between the tailings pile and the new 250-acre disposal site at Crescent Junction 30 miles away in time to start moving the waste next spring.

A group that says it seeks to protect Utahns from nuclear and toxic waste wants to know where high-level radioactive waste will go if the state allows a nuclear power plant to be built in an industrial park on state trust land near Green River.

Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ: URRE) ("URI" or the "Company") announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement with BHP Billiton to acquire 100% of the ownership of Rio Algom Mining LLC ("Rio Algom"). Under the agreement, URI will pay BHP Billiton $110 million in cash and assume certain retirement benefits and reclamation liabilities of which up to $35 million will be pre-funded at closing. URI will also pay BHP Billiton $16.5 million contingent upon the receipt of a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to construct and operate a conventional uranium mill. The transaction is expected to close on or before June 1, 2008 and is subject to customary closing conditions, financing and regulatory approvals.

Mill cited by state for uranium contamination: Gazette.com

The Cotter Corp. uranium mill has been cited by the state for radioactive contamination at the adjacent Shadow Hills Golf Club.

Though the mill has long been connected to nearby groundwater contamination - the area has been a federal Superfund cleanup site since 1984 - this is the first time state officials have linked the mill to contamination at the golf course and the first time contamination has been traced to mill operations after 1979, when it was rebuilt.

WASHINGTON — The Energy Department estimates it could cost up to $1 billion to clean up the uranium mill tailings in Moab by 2019, based on an anticipated report issued to Congress late Tuesday.

The 2019 deadline gets the project done faster than the 2028 deadline the department submitted to Congress last year but is still way beyond the 2012 deadline initially proposed when the department took over the project.

MONTICELLO - Cancer victims and their families here have launched a new phase of their campaign for recognition of the cruel legacy left by a government uranium mill.
Steve Young, organizer of the Monticello Victims of Mill Tailings Exposure, encouraged his neighbors to push the federal government for a long-term program that would help pay for cancer screening and expenses related to the old mill.

MONTICELLO (AP) — Utah health officials are taking a closer look at cancer rates among residents of Monticello. Some are occurring at twice the normal rate, possibly because of a uranium mill near the southeastern Utah town.

State officials say Monticello residents had higher-than-normal rates of lung and bronchial cancer.

Epidemiologist John Contreras says it's "plausible" that there's a connection between cancer and dust and contaminated soils from the defunct mill.

The company hopes to build the mill on 880 private acres between Naturita and Paradox, in Montrose County
