Residents had their first shot in nearly two years Tuesday night to corner regulators about the future of the former Shieldalloy Metallurgical Corp.

The issue is whether the radioactive residue of the former smelting facility goes away for disposal or becomes a 1,000-year environmental sore in eyesight of the downtown.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is overseeing the facility's decommissioning. It dispatched 12 officials, from groundwater specialists to legal counsel for an unusual meeting at Edgarton Memorial School on Catawba Avenue.

NRC: NRC Announces Opportunity to Participate in Hearing on New Reactor Application for Calvert Cliffs Site

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission today announced the opportunity to participate in the hearing on a Combined License (COL) application for a new reactor at the Calvert Cliffs site near Lusby, Md.

UniStar submitted the application in two parts -- the safety analysis and related information on March 17, 2008, and the environmental report on July 13, 2007, along with supplemental information on Dec. 14, 2007. The application, minus proprietary or security-related details, is available on the NRC Web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-reactors/col/calvert-cliffs.html.

Reid Testifies About The Dangers Associated With Yucca

Nevada Senator Harry Reid testified this week at a hearing before the Commerce Committee regarding the safety and security dangers associated with the proposal to ship 77,000 tons of nuclear waste to Yucca Mountain. Reid spoke about the Department of Energy’s unpreparedness to begin a massive nuclear waste shipping campaign.

“It’s unfortunate that the Energy Department once again is refusing to let logic get in the way of building its nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain,” said Reid concluding “The terrible risks of transporting nuclear waste is yet another reason that we need to stop the government from hemorrhaging any more money on this failed project. NRC: NRC Schedules Two Public Meetings to Discuss NFS Nuclear Fuel Plant Performance

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled two meeting with officials of Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin, Tenn., one to discuss the company’s efforts to improve the facility’s safety culture, and a second the following day to review NFS performance during the first half of 2008.

The first meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Oct. 1 at the NFS Training Center on Jackson Love Highway, which is off Interstate 26 in Erwin. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the progress of the NFS Comprehensive Safety Culture Improvement Initiative, which was ordered by the NRC last year after a series of safety violations at the facility. The meeting is open to the public, and NRC officials will be available to answer questions from interested observers.

The agency is preparing for an onslaught of permit applications to launch at least 14 new in-situ leach uranium mine operations across the West, most of them in Wyoming. In response, the commission launched a generic environmental impact statement meant to address general issues regarding in-situ uranium mining.

DOE submitted its application June 3, and the NRC accepted the application for review on Sept 8. The meeting will provide an opportunity for residents of Nye County, where Yucca Mountain is located, to obtain information about how the NRC will decide whether to authorize construction of the proposed repository.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will conduct two public meetings Wednesday at the Ohio State University South Centers Auditorium at 1864 Shyville Road in Piketon.

The first meeting will begin at 7 p.m., and NRC officials plan to discuss the results of USEC Inc.'s annual review of safety performance with officials from USEC. Marge Detraz, long-time outspoken Lincoln County opponent of the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository and the planned Department of Energy (DOE) railroad through the county, was removed from the September 2 County Commission meeting by a Sheriff’s Deputy and was not permitted re-entry until the meeting was adjourned.

Cradling her infant daughter, Lynnea Smith of Crownpoint — who helped push the Navajo Nation’s ban on uranium mining and milling — tried to hold back her emotions as she spoke, but the tears of frustration came anyway.

A Nuclear Regulatory Commission hearing in Chadron last week, intended primarily to take public comment on a proposal for use of a generic Environmental Impact Statement in issuing permits for In-Situ Leach (ISL) mines such as the Crow Butte Resources mine near Crawford, provided a primer on the ISL process for an audience of about 35 people, and a discussion forum for several of those involved in challenges to Crow Butte’s proposed expansion project.

Among the details to emerge from the meeting was acknowledgment by the NRC that, although ISL mine permits call for returning groundwater to its original condition when mining is done, some of the “baseline parameters” have proved unachievable by mining companies.
