The St. Petersburg Times - News - Ecologists: 10,000 Tons Of Waste Headed for City

Up to 10,000 tons of depleted uranium hexafluoride are expected to travel through St. Petersburg in the next six months, according to the local branch of the international environmental pressure group Bellona. The next cargo is expected to arrive in town in early October.

Arriving by sea, the radioactive material will then be sent by rail to the town of Novouralsk in Siberia for reprocessing and storage. Most of the cargo arrives in Russia from the Netherlands and Germany but Russia has signed contracts with India, Pakistan and China — states that are rapidly bolstering their nuclear programs — and looks set to receive even more spent nuclear fuel and uranium hexafluoride for reprocessing.

Tags: du europe n-waste nuclear nuke.news nuke.news.int nw-transport russia scandal

Posted by: theenergynet

The DoD, the nation's biggest polluter, is now cleaning up 29,500 currently or formerly contaminated sites in every state and territory. California alone has 3,912 contaminated sites on 441 current and former DoD installations. Many of DoD's facilities have already contaminated groundwater sources of drinking water.... The cost to clean up toxic munitions contamination and unexploded ordnance at active and former military installations around the country may reach $200 billion." - The National Resources Defense Council, April 21, 2004.

Highlights and Sticky Notes:

Tags: du fuel-cycle n-weapons nuclear nuke.news safety uranium

Posted by: theenergynet

Navy's Nose Grows Lonnnng On Depleted Uranium!

While abolishing the use of radioactive Uranium munitions might indeed be the heart-felt intent of this particular Rear Admiral, the facts are somewhat different. For example, the Department of the Navy's budget appropriations from 2005 to 2008 included a whole lot of 25 mm Depleted Uranium ammo within its more than $773 Million budgeted expenses for procurement of the Marine Corps' Light Armor Vehicles upgraded Lethality Program.

Tags: du fuel-cycle n-weapons nuclear nuke.news safety uranium

Posted by: theenergynet

The Hawaii County Council--after prolonged debate with testimonies from dozens of Peace activists & expert medical Dr. Lorrin Pang--passed a Resolution yesterday urging the immediate cessation of bombing and live fire exercises by the U.

During the summer of 1991, the United States military had collected artillery, tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles, conventional and unconventional munitions, trucks, etc. at Camp Doha in Kuwait. As result of carelessness this weapons depot caught fire with consequent catastrophic explosion resulting in death, injury, illness and extensive environmental contamination from depleted uranium and conventional explosives. Recently the emirate of Kuwait required the United States Department of Defense to remove the contamination.

Tags: du fuel-cycle n-weapons nuclear nuke.news

Posted by: theenergynet

Howard Killian told the Hawaii County Council yesterday.

Measurements show no radiation from depleted uranium is extending outside the nearly 109,000-acre base, and radiation inside is so low that devices made with uranium are hard to find, Killian said.

Tags: dod du fuel-cycle hi n-weapons nuclear nuke.news safety uranium

Posted by: theenergynet
