We are pleased to announce that another round of Google's FREE training program for K-12 educators is coming to the windy city! Outstanding educators from around the world are encouraged to apply for the Google Teacher Academy taking place on Wednesday, September 24, 2008.

The GTA is an intensive, one-day event (8:30am-7:30pm) where participants get hands-on experience with Google's free products and other technologies, learn about innovative instructional strategies, collaborate with exceptional educators, and immerse themselves in an innovative corporate environment. Upon completion, GTA participants become Google Certified Teachers who share what they learn with other K-12 educators in their local region.

50 outstanding educators from around the world will be selected to attend the GTA based on their passion for teaching, their experience as leaders, and their use of technology in K-12 settings. Each applicant is REQUIRED to produce and submit an original one-minute video on either of the following topics: "Motivation and Learning" or "Classroom Innovation." Applications for the event in Chicago are due on August 24, 2008. If possible, please use Google Video or YouTube to post these original videos. Participants must provide their own travel, and if necessary, their own lodging. Though we will give preference to K-12 educators within a 90-minute local commute of an Academy event, anyone may apply.

(Blue Sky) Attending Classes in Google Earth?

Hello All,

I'm a noob to Diigo and this group, so I thought I would post an idea that I'm interested in and try to get the noob thing over with asap.

I use Google Earth, SketchUp, and YouTube to pre-vis my dissertation topic (Media Display Prisms) and after playing around with these tools as a pre-vis technique, I thought...wow, what if Google Earth could actually DO something like this?

Hence my first topic question: What if students and instructors could either/or/and attend campus classes by "flying" to them in Google Earth? I don't think we are "there" yet to make this happen, but what about in 5-10 yrs? A sort of Metaverse Roadmap Offramp along the way in the "mirror worlds" category?

Thanks, Lucy, for starting this group. What a terrific idea! I've already found some gems in the shared bookmarks that I didn't know about. I think I'm quickly becoming a Diigo fan/addict.

I have been using iGoogle and bookmarks with my students. However, Google Gadgets are becoming increasingly inappropriate for students. I am not sure how long our filtering device on our district servers and their content sniffers are going to allow Google Gadgets to be accessed.

E-Mail suggestions for elementary/middle schools using Google Apps

Hi all,

I've been asked for suggestions on how to create e-mail addresses for students so that they can use Google Docs and other Google apps. The only thing is that the schools don't want their stundents really using the e-mail accounts for personal communications because they don't want to take on the liability issue.

Do any of you have any suggestions? I would really appreciate any help you can provide. I am also going to post this question in the GCT group.

Hi guys,

The 'disposable' email solution may not be necessary. We use Google Docs without student email at all. Here's how.

We signed up for 'Google Apps Team Edition.' This is a slightly different offering that is aimed at businesses. To use it, all the participants need to have an email address at the same domain. (Or DO they...?) This is a problem for schools that don't provide student email. We don't.

To get around this, I used my school blog domain NCS-Tech.org (which I own personally) to create email redirects so that a student's account could be validated at signup. I essentially created 140 email ailiases (for our entire 8th grade) which were routed to me. When I created the accounts, the activation emails were sent to me, I activated them, and then deleted the email alias.

The result of this was a working Google Apps account that did NOT have a functioning email address attached to it - GMail or otherwise. To access their stuff, they go here to log in:

Now, granted, they are missing a big chunk of the power of the tool - everything having to do with email collaboration - but, it's a small price to pay to enable us to use Google Apps at all.

Here's the best part: recent changes to how Google Apps Team Edition works means that verification emails are no longer sent. When you create the first account, as the administrator for the site, you will get a captcha code when creating new user accounts. Enter that and the account is activated. Done!

There are some differences between Team Edition and the others - most notably, the user account management functionality is greatly reduced - but this was the PERFECT solution for us. Google Apps and no messy email!
