We are unlikely to find more balanced approaches to civic learning in schools. The integration of new civic styles in various learning environments remains a formidable challenge. Many adults (teachers, youth workers, scholars, policy makers) are unaware or unappreciative of the civic identity shift that has occurred among many young people. Similarly, many of the online communities developed by governments and youth experts fail to utilize the power of social networking involving participatory media in relatively open, democratic contexts.

We need to create or identify existing, informal learning environments within which young people can learn civic skills and practice citizenship.

I tried to use vernacular creativity as much as possible because it focuses on the practices of users in relation to their own lives;

some of the most interesting discussions of new labour theory in relation to network culture have been happening on the Institute for Distributed Creativity mailing list lately (https://lists.thing.net/pipermail/idc/2007-August/002698.html)

I found that the spaces that were most rich in examples of vernacular creativity were at the same time constrained in certain ways

the most active, intensive forms of participation seem to be taken up mainly by already-literate bloggers, gamers, and internet junkies

Dabei können Bilder, ob bewegt oder nicht, einen gewaltigen Einfluss auf Öffentlichkeit und Politik ausüben. Man denke nur an die Aufnahmen aus dem amerikanischen "Foltergefängnis" Abu Ghureib oder vom Massaker in My Lai in Vietnam.

Doch um solch einen Einfluss zu entwickeln, müssen die Videos und Fotos in einen größeren Zusammenhang gestellt werden. Wo geschah der Vorfall, warum geschah er, was steckt dahinter. Das ist nicht immer leicht herauszufinden - wie will man etwa den Kongo-Konflikt in wenigen Worten erklären? Bei YouTube fehlt meist jede Einordnung. Das könnte im Netz besser funktionieren. Damit nicht nur der schon zuvor interessierte Zuschauer zur Wikipedia huscht, um die Hintergründe zu erfahren.

Popmusiker Peter Gabriel versucht seit 1992 zusammen mit der Reebok Human Rights Foundation, eine Kombination aus Augenzeugenbericht und Hintergrundinformation auf die Beine zu stellen: Auf der Webseite "Witness" sollen der Welt die Augen geöffnet werden.

Das soll sich aber ändern. Noch diesen November wird unter dem Namen "The Hub" eine zentrale Anlaufstelle geschaffen werden.

Dawid Bartelt, Pressesprecher von Amnesty International Deutschland zeigt sich kritisch: "Wenn Videos und Blogeinträge nicht in einen größeren Zusammenhang gestellt und dem Publikum konkrete Handlungsmöglichkeiten geboten werden, verpufft diese Art von Öffentlichkeit, noch bevor sie Wirkung zeigen kann."

Besonders ein Punkt begeistert Bürger– und Menschenrechtler: Das fast schon revolutionäre Potential der Netzvideos. Durch die massive Verbreitung von Video-Handys können Bürger Übergriffe der Obrigkeit filmen und im Nu über das Internet um die Welt schicken.
